Dylan Talley-Bailey: I'm thinking about maybe becoming a substance-abuse counselor and getting a counseling certificate and then maybe a teaching certificate to go along with it. And then try get a job at a high school or something.
DL: Why do you want to do that?
DB: There's a lot of kids out there who do drugs and alcohol and whatnot just because they don't know better. I think I could help because I've gotten into trouble with it in my time. I've seen friends throw their lives away because of stuff like that. I don't want to see it happen to other kids if they could avoid it.
DL: What caused you to get out of that kind of lifestyle?
DB: I got put on probation for getting an MIP and larceny under $250. I pulled a runner, and it went bad, and I got caught. So, I decided to say (expletive) that more or less.
DL: Do you think it's a problem at UNM?
DB: Probably just as much as it is anywhere. I know friends who have been caught drinking on campus, and I've been caught drinking on campus before. It's a problem, but it's just as a big of a problem as it is anywhere else. There could be better ways of dealing with it than they do. From my experience, it's just been a slap on the wrist and they say, "Don't do it again."
DL: What approach would you use to talk to kids about it?
DB: I'd just try to show them what could happen. My whole family on both sides of my family has had substance problems. I'd just show how it can ruin your life in the long run as opposed to just telling kids, "Hey, it's bad. It's illegal. Don't do it." I'd actually show them and give them examples.
DL: Why did you decide to come to UNM?
DB: Because I got in.
DL: What do you like about the campus?
DB: It's got a laid-back vibe to it. There's all kinds of different people from different spots. It's a nice chill place in Albuquerque. It's not really in the best location of Albuquerque, but the campus is set up nice. With the exception of the offices, it's pretty user-friendly.
DL: What offices aren't
user-friendly?
DB: The administration's office and the bursar's office I've had a lot of problems with, and I know a lot of people who have.
DL: What problems have you had?
DB: I had an older brother who came here, and when I was trying to turn in my application - I had to turn in an application fee and all that stuff - they put that on my brother's account instead of making one for me. Then when we went to correct it, they thought that what we were saying was my brother didn't go here. So, they dropped him. They took him out of the computers and dropped him. And this was like a week before finals. He didn't find out about it until after he took his finals. So, he had to go track down all his teachers and have them get his grades and say, "No. He's still going here." It's just ridiculous.
