Fair aims to aid healthy lifestyle

Staff Report

Student Health Services will coordinate National Health Education Day for students who want a healthier lifestyle.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cornell Mall.

The National Center for Health Education founded the fair, said student Rebecca Chavez, coordinator of the event.

"The general purpose is to increase the awareness of resources that are available to people to improve or maintain their general health," Chavez said.

Four objectives will be covered at the event: fitness and nutrition, sexual health, emotional and mental health, and health screening, Chavez said.

Some organizations will offer free HIV testing, Chavez said.

Safe-sex kits will be given out at the Student Health Services table.

The kits will include mints, brochures about safe sex and information on symptoms associated with common STIs,

Chavez said.

Students will have an opportunity to learn about stress management, said Shirlee James-Johnson, Health Education and Prevention Manager.

"The overall environment at UNM can be very stressful for some students," James-Johnson said. "So we will have a massage therapist available at the event to provide free 10-minute massages for students."

About 20 organizations will take part in the event, including the American Diabetes Association and Planned Parenthood, Chavez said.

Planned Parenthood and Care Net Pregnancy Center will offer free pregnancy tests and provide information about pregnancy, she said.
