UNM's disabled individuals deserve to be kept visible

Editor,

Last week's three-part series on disabilities was very good. The online video was excellent.

Kudos to Xavier Mascareñas and Joey Trisolini for a great editing job on the video story.

Originally, two people in wheelchairs were interviewed for the wheelchair accessibility article published on Thursday. Although my face was seen, I want to acknowledge Darlene Whitehead, whose voice was the one primarily heard throughout the piece.

I am in a power chair. Whitehead must maneuver the UNM campus in a manual wheelchair, which is not so easy, especially when going up steep ramps such as the one between Zimmerman Library and the upper plaza.

As I mentioned in the video, people affected by disabilities are individuals - "different strokes for different folks," or different disabilities for different people.

Often, we feel invisible, yet each of us is a unique individual with our own unique story to tell. I strongly encourage the Daily Lobo to continue highlighting disabled students' accomplishments and individual stories - say once a month - in the future.

There are many accomplished individuals with disabilities on this campus who have an interesting account of their life to tell. Please keep us visible.

One final point: Improving access for people with visible disabilities always improves access for everyone - universal access is something that will improve our society for all.

Thanks to the Daily Lobo editors and reporters for doing this series and the video.
