Mt. Taylor given temporary protection by committee
(AP) - A state committee has approved a proposal from five American Indian tribes to give central New Mexico's Mount Taylor temporary protection as a cultural property in a contentious meeting attended by about 700 people. The Navajo Nation and four pueblos asked the state to provide a one-year emergency listing for the mountain they consider sacred to protect it from an anticipated uranium mining boom.

Rice uses harsh language to criticize Israel's actions
JERUSALEM (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice used exceptionally harsh language Sunday, criticizing Israel's building Jewish homes on disputed land. Israel must understand the pall its actions cast over talks and on the confidence of the United States, European nations and others that Israel is bargaining in good faith, Rice said, following meetings with Palestinian officials in the West Bank.
