Man dies in Santa Fe County jail from apparent heroin overdose

SANTA FE (AP) - A 33-year-old Espanola man has died of an apparent heroin overdose in a cell at the Santa Fe County jail, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department. Guards found Ivan Atencio unconscious Friday in a segregated cell at the jail where he was serving time after being convicted in April of fleeing officers during a January 2007 chase. Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said jail staff had placed Atencio in the segregation cell after he struggled with a jail guard. Solano said he was uncertain if jail staff found contraband in Atencio's possession then.

Same-sex couples tie the knot after court lifts gay marriage ban

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Same-sex couples across California exchanged vows and wedding bands on the first weekend since the state began allowing gays and lesbians to legally marry. California became the only U.S. state besides Massachusetts to allow gay couples to marry June 16, one month after the state Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages. But the wedding spree could be short-lived if voters approve a November ballot initiative that would reverse the May 15 court ruling and amend the state Constitution to bar gay marriage.

Female suicide bomber kills 15,

wounds 40 in Baghdad attack

BAGHDAD (AP) - A female suicide bomber struck outside a government complex northeast of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 15 people and wounding more than 40, U.S. and Iraqi officials said. A U.S. military statement said the dead included seven Iraqi police and eight civilians. Ten police were among the wounded. Iraqi authorities said 16 people were killed and 42 wounded. Al-Qaida has been increasingly using women because abaya robes easily conceal explosives. Iraqi police often lack enough policewomen to search women carefully.
