Editor,
I am not sure I completely understand moving Student Services off campus. I can understand that a corporation with an empty building or partially empty building would want to rent it to UNM. Since the campus does not yet know how well the relocation will work, I hope the University has not entered into a contract it cannot get out of, the kind of contract with terms stating the other party has a right to expecting many years of rent, and if the contract is broken, the University has to agree to go a Delaware courtroom and still pay the remaining years of rent. In other words, I hope we didn't just give Lockheed Martin a golden parachute on us.
For this reason I would like to ask UNM to make the terms of the contract with Lockheed Martin available on the UNM home page for us all to see. Additionally, I can understand that an off-campus student services annex with extended evening hours at least several times a week would benefit many working students who attend evening and weekend programs. However, I am also sure many other students, perhaps thousands, would be significantly affected by having to commute from Main Campus to the off-campus site.
I have to wonder whether shuttle services will be provided for on-campus students without cars. I am also curious about the physical security and possible abuse or misuse of data and information for campus students being maintained off campus.
