UNM Crime Briefs

Police arrest alleged felon in the grass

On Aug. 31, a UNMPD officer observed a man lying on a grassy patch near Oñate Hall, according to a police report. The officer suspected the man of stealing from Johnson Center, and police say they had been searching for the suspect of that crime for that entire day. When the officer approached the man and asked for identification, the man complied.

According to the report, the officer discovered that the man had an outstanding felony warrant for failure to comply with a judge’s order on receiving and transferring a stolen motor vehicle. The officer arrested the man and booked him into the Prisoner Transport Unit, according to the report.

Cops: Urinator ignores ban from campus

On Aug. 31, a police officer assigned to underage alcohol enforcement operation at Lobo Village reported observing a “black male urinating against the west side of Building 15.” According to the police report, the man appeared to be very intoxicated, staggered as he walked and had bloodshot eyes. The man said he was visiting his girlfriend in Lobo Village. Also according to the report, the man had his cousin as a designated driver for the night, but the cousin was “slightly less intoxicated.”

The officer barred the man from visiting the UNM campus for the duration of the Labor Day weekend and warned him that should he return, police would arrest him for criminal trespass. The officer did not arrest the man for indecent exposure and instead gave the men 15 minutes to leave the property, according to the report.

Later, on Sept. 2, a UNMPD officer on foot patrol at Lobo Village observed a suspicious subject through the common area of the buildings, according to a report.

When the man saw the officer, he “made a 180 degree turn and began to quickly walk away.” The officer followed, and saw a “black male adult bring his hand down from in front of his face and drop what appeared to be a green beer bottle” into the sidewalk. According to the report, the black male adult was the same man to whom the officer had given a warning on Aug. 31, which was valid for the duration of the Labor Day weekend.

When the officer began speaking with the man, the man allegedly “began casting glances around, as though looking for an escape route.” According to the report, the officer warned the man that if he ran away or fought, the officer would Taser him. The officer identified the bottle as a Dos Equis, which was “foamy, and the glass was cool to the touch.” The officer booked him with criminal trespass and charged him with indecent exposure, according to the report.
