Florida
A student was shot outside an Orlando-area high school after a fight broke out near a bus stop on Wednesday, according to Reuters. The wounded student was alert and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The school was on lockdown, but students were eventually taken to a different school to be picked up by their parents. Sheriff’s deputies are searching for the shooter.

Kansas
Five former players from the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs are suing the team for damage that resulted from head injuries they received while playing. According to USA Today, the lawsuit claims that the players, who were on the team in the late 1980s and early 1990s, suffer from “post-concussion syndrome and latent brain disease.” The players also displayed symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease found to be linked with concussions. This is the first lawsuit to be filed against an NFL team. Previous lawsuits involving head injuries have been filed against the league.

Utah
A federal judge will hear arguments involving a same-sex marriage lawsuit on Wednesday, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune. Three couples filed a lawsuit challenging Utah’s Amendment 3, which bans same-sex marriage, arguing that it is unconstitutional. Voters passed the ban in 2004. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby has been asked to produce a summary statement, meaning an argument that would be found so compelling that there would be no need for an extended legal fight.

Washington, D.C.
President Obama said in an address Wednesday that he has a personal stake in raising the minimum wage and strengthening the social safety net of the United States, according to the Los Angeles Times. In his speech, Obama cited his own experiences with programs that helped him get ahead. He also talked about income inequality and how it was a challenge to ensure the economy works for everyone, regardless of economic status. Obama has lowered deficit reduction on his administration’s priority list, saying it was more important to focus on increasing opportunity.
