Monday on the Street: Professor under investigation returning to classroom

What is your take on a UNM professor coming back to campus to teach classes in the fall after a brief suspension for charges of sexual harassment and discrimination?

Allison Bingham, sophomore, biology

"I don’t know why that’s tolerated. We have a huge problem on campus anyway. I feel like this is kind of enabling this to happen over and over again. By letting him back on campus I think it allows it to happen again. The victims kind of lose their voice because obviously they aren’t being taken seriously if they let him back on campus. I think it’s kind of ridiculous. I’m surprised it hasn’t been bigger in the news. I try to keep up with this kind of thing and I really haven’t heard about it. I’m a lady. I ride my bike everywhere at night. I try to keep up with safety issues for women on campus. Gotta look out for the ladies man."

Henry Bender, junior, theatre

"On the one hand people deserve second chances, but on the other hand what this guy did was pretty heinous, and I feel like suspension is definitely in the right direction but as a student I would be afraid to take one of his classes. Honestly, I wouldn’t have him still teaching if I had a say in it."

Tessar Jonner, senior, emergency medical services

"I do think if you are sexually harassing somebody you should not be allowed to be around those people again. For example, a pedophile is not allowed within 500 feet of a school, therefore somebody who is sexually harassing students should not be allowed around students. Even if you have tenure you sort of broke the honor code, an honor code dealing with an actual human being."

Shannen Ramey, graduate student, public health

"I guess it depends on how severe the discrimination was. It sounds like he is fairly unprofessional. It does give UNM a poor name. I guess that all has to be taken into consideration. I do think everyone deserves a second chance, but it sounds like it’s been multiple times. It wasn’t like a one-time happening. We just have to consider how many chances do we give him, and how that is going to make UNM look when you’re trying to get students here and parents care about the safety of their kids."
