Event to collect, recycle electronic equipment

When it comes to recycling, aluminum cans and cardboard are not the only materials that can be spared from the landfill, the manager of UNM's recycling program said. An event Saturday will collect electronic equipment to be recycled including computers, microwaves, televisions, irons, cell phones and toasters, Linda McCormick said.

UNM to sell locally grown food

Locally grown, organic produce is coming to UNM. "There is support for locally grown food on both ends of campus," said Carol Scott, operations manager for UNM Food Services. "So, starting in the spring semester, we will also offer organic, local choices at the Marketplace in the SUB."

Staff Report Members of an anti-war group dressed as clowns and demonstrated near a National Guard booth in front of the SUB on Wednesday. "The National Guard should not be here," said Ethan Ganuer, a member Carnival Insurgente de Albuquerque. "We hope to persuade students not to join the National Guard.

Members of GPSA to present petition to recall president

The president of GPSA is expecting Saturday's meeting to be heated as members of the organization plan to present a petition for his recall. "It's going to be a contentious situation," Joseph Garcia said. "The allegations are unfounded. I think it's a personal vendetta."

Survey addresses on-campus parking (Video)

Taking an online survey can help Parking and Transportation Services improve its operations. "We take these, compile the answers and look at areas where we can improve," said Clovis Acosta, director of the department. "We are hoping to get several thousand responses - a good pool so we can mix it up."

UNM finalizes plans to sell Hibben House

After years of trying to find a way to preserve the legacy of a deceased professor, the University finalized a deal to sell the Hibben House on Monday. The Hibben House, at 3005 Campus Blvd. N.E., was once home to Frank Hibben, an anthropology professor and big game hunter who died in 2002.

ASUNM gets ready to lobby state for legislative priorities

Staff Report ASUNM is gearing up for New Mexico's next legislative session in January, and it wants students to help lobby the state. The student government will have a booth in the SUB starting next week to inform students about UNM Day at the Legislature, said Jolonzo Goldtooth, director of ASUNM's lobbying committee.

Students make holiday season brighter for low-income kids

Students can be Santa Claus for children from low-income families by taking an ornament from a Christmas tree in the SUB. The ornaments on the Giving Tree give the name of a child and list what he or she wants for Christmas, said student Jenny Shroba, projects director of the ASUNM Community Experience.

Board to help decide future of golf course

UNM President David Schmidly announced Wednesday the members of a board that will help determine the future of the North Golf Course area. Hundreds of people have turned out at rallies for the preservation of the course since February when UNM issued requests for information for commercial development of University-owned property, including the North Golf Course.

New fingerprint system helps solve crimes

Crimes that have gone unsolved for years at UNM are now being put to rest with better technology and a new law, a UNM Police spokesman said. Lt. Pat Davis said UNM Police used to submit fingerprints to the state crime lab to no avail.

Kappa Sigma loses charter for two years

The charter for UNM's chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity has been revoked until 2009. Kappa Sigma had been suspended since Aug. 21 after it was reported that a fight broke out at the fraternity's house during a party with alcohol.

UNM looks to replace ICES evaluation system

For the past 20 years, students have participated in the same end-of-semester ritual: filling out the ICES evaluations. But UNM is looking to replace ICES, because it's outdated, said Nick Flor, UNM Teaching and Technology faculty coordinator.

North Golf Course plans in question

Staff Report UNM shied away from possible plans to develop the North Golf Course on Tuesday. The University will not pay back its institutional bond with funds that could be generated if the course is developed. It was taken off, because the University needs input from the community before it looks at what could be built there, UNM President David Schmidly said.

UNM runner gets All-American honors

UNM cross country runner Jeremy Johnson earned All-American honors after placing 20th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Johnson finished the 10,000-meter course in 30:18 and recorded the fourth-highest finish at the cross country national championships in school history. Matt Gonzales was a school-best runner-up in 2004.
