Alumna Vera Norwood met with about 20 staff members Thursday to discuss her achievements as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and her plans for the future if selected as dean. Norwood got her bachelor's, master's and doctorate from UNM.
LAS VEGAS - The UNM women's basketball team was not going to watch Brigham Young celebrate another first place. The Lobos secured their fourth Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship in five years Saturday, defeating the regular season conference champion Cougars 63-49 in Las Vegas.
The UNM Wilderness Alliance will spend spring break tracking down Mexican gray wolves. About 15 people, including 10 students and a couple wolf trackers, will go to the Gila National Forest and backpack through the mountains in search of two packs of the endangered species, the Aspen and Saddle packs, said Phil Carter, president of the alliance. The purpose of the trip is to document the wolves' behavior and use the information to raise awareness about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' wolf reintroduction program, Carter said.
With midterms and test anxiety in the air, the College Enrichment and Outreach Programs uses the Adam Sandler movie "Billy Madison" to teach students how to study more effectively. The program is sponsoring a test-taking workshop today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall Room 102. "Test-taking skills is not exactly the most exciting topic," said Ricardo Romero, senior student program adviser. "What we try to do is incorporate that to make it a little more interesting for students."

UNM is trying to get pit bulls out of the doghouse. El Centro de la Raza hosted a pit bull awareness and pet adoption fair Tuesday in the Mesa Vista Hall courtyard. The event was held to educate the campus community about the breed and provide information on pet adoption, city pet ordinances, and dog care and training, said student Laura Hernandez, who helped organize the event.

Academic excellence is one way to get scholarships. This semester, entering a raffle is another. Fall tuition is one of seven prizes being offered in the Tuition Scholarship Raffle. This is the first time a tuition raffle will take place at UNM, said Quonya Huff, co-coordinator of the raffle. The winning tickets will be drawn at Johnson Field on April 21. The raffle is sponsored by Trailblazers, an organization in the Alumni Association. Any full-time student with a 2.0 GPA or better can participate. One ticket is $3, and four tickets are $10.

The New Mexico Senate passed a bill Friday that would make students on the Lottery Scholarship exempt from tuition raises. Sen. Stuart Ingle, the author of the bill and a Republican from Portales, said he wants schools to think carefully about raising tuition. "If you look at what's happened over the past 10 years, tuition keeps going up," he said. "Our lottery funds can only support so much. I'm trying to get some stability in the money for our kids." The bill is set to go through the House education, finance and judicial committees.
Students got a chance to have an international experience without leaving campus Saturday. The World Language Expo in Ortega Hall had competitions and presentations, including Tahitian dance, chalk art and Vietnamese origami. "It's a tremendous coming-together of the community," said Marina Peters-Newell, coordinator of lower-division languages. "One of the things we've tried to do is bring together culture and countries so that New Mexicans get a taste of the world."
The Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation announced a $1.6 million pledge to UNM Hospital on Friday to build an inpatient children's wing and surgical suite in the Bill and Barbara Richardson Pavilion. The donation demonstrates commitment to patients and their families, said Don Blanton, president of the foundation's board of directors. "It's our outward show of support for them," he said. "A lot of the people we deal with are below the poverty level."

Hackers often use networks of hijacked computers called botnets to send spam and attack Web sites. But defending against hackers is usually left up to single computers. "If you have one person trying to prevent action from hundreds of thousands of computers working together, the chances aren't very good," said Jared Saia, a UNM professor of computer science. "It's a one-against-many battle."
