Regents grant creative writing MFA

Students can now get a master of fine arts in creative writing. The MFA degree is considered professional and requires more rigorous work from students than the master of arts. UNM's Board of Regents voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the degree that will replace the MA program in creative writing.

Video lectures aired at branches

Branch campus students are often not taught by real-life instructors. Instead, they watch taped lectures broadcast from UNM's main campus. UNM Los Alamos enrollment services coordinator Marlene Kelley said the primary complaint among branch students is the time it takes instructors to respond to them.

Regent meeting notes

* The board gave the Health Sciences Center permission to ask the Legislature for a one-time $660,000 appropriation to help with the center's permanent library collection. * The board approved a second Health Sciences Center request to ask the Commission on Higher Education to adopt a base adjustment of $672,300 to help with federal mandates that haven't been funded.

Student regent position up for grabs

Don't you wish you had a vote on tuition increases, UNM policies and choosing the University president? Student Regent Andrea Cook did, and time is nearing to choose her successor. Applications for the student regent position are due Oct. 1. "You need to have a want to do good things for UNM," Cook said.

UNM gets money for digital media

UNM secured $3 million from Gov. Bill Richardson on Tuesday that will be used to develop courses related to digital media. The money for UNM's Art, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory comes out of the $10 million the governor received from the Legislature for his Film Training Initiative.

Regent committee OKs budget items

The Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities committee met Monday for more than three hours to consider three items and hear reports from UNM administration. The committee is one of three standing committees that will join the Health Sciences Committee and the Student and Academic Affairs Committee today for the regents meeting at 1 p.

If students have something to say to UNM's Board of Regents, today is the chance. So what's the big deal? The Board of Regents governs UNM. As a unit, the regents have the final say on tuition increases, appoint the University president, approve degrees and constitutions, and establish the goals of the University.

Pizza shop caters to college crowd

Students have a new place to put their backpacks down and get a bite to eat. "It's a great pit stop," owner Derek Young said. BrickYard Pizza opened Aug. 22. It took over the space at 2216 Central Ave., formerly occupied by Rebar. Terry Keane, one of Rebar's former owners, said the restaurant shut down after about a year because it wasn't getting the business they expected from students.

Products to test for date rape drug in the works

by Danielle Bloch Daily Lobo Of the 10 percent of rapes reported, 6 percent of those have to do with GHB, said John Steiner, campus office of substance abuse prevention project coordinator. Some companies are making and distributing products that test for Gamma-hydroxybutyrate.

Long-term preparation necessary for job hunts

by Deborah Harvey Daily Lobo Finding a job may not be as easy as some students think. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, students who are ready to graduate but haven't begun to look for a job are behind. It takes up to a year to find a job, according to the department.

The two candidates for New Mexico's 1st congressional district seat focused mainly on foreign policy in their first debate Sunday. Democratic Sen. Richard Romero and Republican Rep. Heather Wilson spoke before hundreds at Congregation Albert, a Jewish temple.

Education Expo sees low turnout at fair

Representatives of New Mexico's institutions of higher learning lined the Avenue of the Governors at Expo New Mexico on Friday to introduce themselves to high school students. Brandon Trujillo, senior program officer for New Mexico Gear Up, said he was disappointed that turnout was low this year because most kids were still in school.

Visitor takes in 1st glimpse of Zozobra's flare

The moaning and groaning of Old Man Gloom sounded miles away from Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe. Hundreds of people were on the streets. More were standing outside their homes waiting for the 50-foot effigy to burn. Dancers below Zozobra were nothing compared to his size.

Woman attacked in UNMH parking garage

Les Fertic, 24, has been charged with attempted rape after he allegedly attacked a woman in her car Wednesday morning in a UNM Hospital parking structure. He is being held at the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center on a $125,000 cash or surety bond.

Dawud Shakir is a UNM senior and a Jordan native. His father is an Iraqi, but lives with his wife in the United States. Shakir is also treasurer of UNM's Muslim Student Association. Daily Lobo: What were you doing when Sept. 11 happened? Dawud Shakir: I was sleeping.

Events commemorating Sept. 11

* Wednesday night, a candlelight vigil was held at the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM. More than 1,000 vigils were organized nationwide to honor families of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers who have been killed in Iraq. * At 6:15 this morning, Albuquerque Fire Department and UNM Police Department addressed students at the Phi Gamma Delta house on Mesa Vista.

America has undergone tremendous change since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The U.S. government has kept its citizens on attack alerts fluctuating from elevated to severe. Departments of counterterrorism and homeland security have worked to assess potential terrorist targets and figure how to prevent further attacks.

Vigil honors fallen soldiers

More than 100 mourners gathered outside of the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM on Thursday night to honor fallen U.S. and Iraqi soldiers. A candlelight vigil was held at the center's courtyard in commemoration of the 1,006 U.S. soldiers and more than 17,000 Iraqi soldiers who have died in Iraq.

Judge: No time for ID rule changes

District Court Judge Robert Thompson ruled that requiring first-time voters to present ID at the polls would cause more harm than good. "Because the plaintiffs' request for extraordinary relief comes approximately 60 days before election, granting the relief the plaintiffs require would likely cause disruption of the conduct of the election and would disrupt the ability of a significant number of voters to cast their votes," Thompson stated in the order.
