Staff Report Seven UNM graduate programs within the college of fine arts and the schools of medicine and law have been ranked among the best in the nation this year by the U.S. News & World Report. The weekly news magazine, which according to its Web site began its annual ranking of more than 1,400 accredited colleges and universities nationwide in 1983, provides the service to aid its readers in researching how their particular school's academic program compares with those of its peers, or schools with broadly similar missions.

The UNM women's golf team held its own at the Ping/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., April 4-6, finishing sixth in a tournament that featured 12 of the top-30 teams in the nation. A former UNM History Department chairman who died in 2000 will be honored today when the University presents his widow and the department with a book of essays commemorating his studies, writings and works. Gerald Nash worked at UNM for more than 30 years and is considered by many of his former colleagues to be a leading scholar in the field of the American West.
UNM golfers Kailin Downs and Michael Letzig are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Downs finished fourth at the Ping/ASU Invitational with rounds of 71-76-69-216. The sophomore birdied five of the last 10 holes in the final round. Downs is the top-ranked sophomore in the country.
Graduate Professional Students Association presidential candidate Aaron Kugler, a second-year law student, says he would like to increase GPSA visibility on campus and make funding more accessible to graduate and professional students. If elected president of GPSA, first-year law student James Meiers says he will help the Board of Regents and the New Mexico State Legislature to better understand the needs of graduate and professional students at UNM. In the last month and a half, Meiers has made a concerted effort to contact the regents and express his ideas for the Graduate and Professional Students Association's future, he said.
Editor, I thought that the Daily Lobo was an "independent student newspaper." I have noticed that you seem to print a large number of non-student letters. Why is that? Is it that the letters sent to you by students don't line up with your ideological position and as such are not worth printing? April is national occupational therapy month and UNM is doing its part to provide the best occupational therapists possible. UNM's Occupational Therapy Graduate Program, offered through the School of Medicine, is an accredited program that began three years ago, said Terry Crowe, the founding director of the program and a medical professor.
