Sports briefs for April 13, 2015

Women’s basketball

The UNM women’s basketball team handed out six team awards at its end-of-year banquet, held Friday night at the Albuquerque Marriott.

According to a release, freshman Cherise Beynon received the Student-athlete of the Year award and the Most Improved Player award.

Head coach Yvonne Sanchez recognized four other Lobos. Sophomore Kianna Keller was named the team’s best defensive player, and junior Alexa Chavez earned honors for taking the most charges. Senior Antiesha Brown took the Reaching for the Stars award, and senior Maddie Muraida earned the Community Lobo award for the most time spent on community service.

Men’s soccer

The Lobos continued their spring exhibition schedule with a 3-1 victory over Denver University Saturday afternoon at Taos Eco Park.

UNM had three goals from three sophomores: Chris Wehan in the third minute, Josh Goss in the 33rd minute and Niko Hansen in the 46th minute.

“I am real proud of the team,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said in a release. “We have been really good this spring, and we keep getting better. We got one match left, and I am excited to play it with this group.”

Sand volleyball

The duo ofAshley Newman and Lise Rugland captured the only two match victories in games against Arizona State and Arizona at the ASU Sand Volleyball Challenge, according to a release.

Newman/Rugland dropped ASU’s Kizzy Willey/Sydney Palmer in two sets, 21-19, 21-18, and also captured a 21-17, 21-14 victory over Arizona’s Taylor Arizobal/Allie Cook.

The Lobo pair has gone 3-1 in the last week.

As a team, UNM fell to ASU and Arizona by 4-1 margins.
