Men's basketball: Leaders emerge in home opener

Leaders came forth for the Lobos on Friday night.

The preseason’s fog of uncertainty which came with both exhibition games began to fade away Friday night as the New Mexico men’s basketball team defeated Texas Southern University 86-57. It began to rid doubt of the team’s lack of leadership and immaturity as compared to prior year’s components.

“I’m really happy that our guys got out to a big start and then I think the biggest thing is we saw that we have a lot of weapons,” head coach Craig Neal said.

The young team ignited Lobo fans as New Mexico dominated the first half with their team-oriented and unselfish play of the game, the most altruistic play Craig Neal has seen from his team, he said.

However, tinges of leadership emerged throughout the team as some players led the pack in overall scoring throughout the night. The top scorer of the night, guardCullen Neal, led the team 22 points and four assists. He also shot 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

“My goal is to be a leader and to be able to lead these young guys. So hopefully I can be that leader,” Cullen Neal said. “And Elijah (Brown) is doing a great job as well so I think that both of us would be a great combo”.

Brown’s night totaled up to an impressive 16 points, six assists, three rebounds, a block and a steal for the Lobos. He saw his first regular-season action since transferring to UNM from Butler.

Butler said it was an emotional game for him.

“I had tears in my eyes to be honest,” Brown said of his first thoughts at the opening game. “Going out there and hearing the fans, the music, seeing my teammates. Everyone was just so ready to play with that selfless mindset”.

Overall, the team played well and showed a sense of unity amongst them, particular to the first half.

“Elijah Brown, in the first half, came over and hugged me and said thanks[…] for having me here,” Coach Neal said. “Then that really hits you. Knowing the kind of impact you’re making on these kids, and that’s what you coach for. Just that little moment.”

The team heads to Las Cruces Sunday to face UNM rival New Mexico State.

“New Mexico State, we know it’s going to be a tough game,” Cullen Neal said. “But we’re not scared of a challenge and we are ready for whoever we play.”
