Opportunity awaits as Lobos officially introduce Karley Nelson as new soccer Head Coach

It’s a new era in University of New Mexico soccer as the Lobos soccer team introduced their new Head Coach Karley Nelson at the University’s fall coaches press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Nelson was elevated to be the team's fifth head coach after serving 11 years as an assistant and associate head coach at UNM. She officially takes over for longtime head coach Heather Dyche, who is resigning to take a new position as the coach of the Under-23 U.S. Women’s National Team. Vice President and Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo said UNM looked for a coach that met championship level standards, supported student athletes and their community and had integrity.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week

There are winners and there are losers. Not every loser is the same, as these players' performances were key in costing their teams this week. These players are favorably known as bobbleheads. “You can’t win ‘em all” is a phrase these pro sports players definitely had to hear after some terrible performances this week. Here are the players whose play this week earned them the title of bobblehead. Pittsburgh Steelers: quarterback Aaron Rodgers There were a few players to pick from NFL week 10, but ultimately, the future hall-of-famer gets the nod for a bizarre performance on Sunday night football.

Students carve their way to victory in Halloween event

On Halloween, the scariest day of the year — especially if you are a pumpkin — students gathered to butcher the orange squash into forms both spooky and sweet. On Friday, Oct. 31, the University of New Mexico Student Union Building hosted their annual pumpkin carving contest, welcoming the opportunity for students to express creativity with their pumpkins.  The  pumpkins were judged in four categories:  “scariest,” ”cutest,” “most creative” and “people’s choice.” The winners won prizes including candy and gift cards.

Lobos hold off Nevada for homecoming game; send Wolf Pack packing without a dance

The University of New Mexico Lobos returned to University Stadium for their homecoming game against the University of Nevada Wolf Pack, after back to back losses to conference opponents on the road. This time, the Lobos narrowly snatched victory from the Wolf Pack, winning 24-22 on Saturday, Oct. 18.  The Lobos started hot out of the gate scoring their first opening drive points of the season, with a 16-play, 75-yard drive in the first quarter and ended with a two-yard touchdown by running back D.J. Mckinney, giving the Lobos an early 7-0 lead.

New Mexico United draws with Orange County SC in Oktoberfest thriller

New Mexico United clinched a playoff berth last week versus Phoenix Rising FC and welcomed the Orange County SC on Saturday, Oct. 11.  United had a chance to clinch a home game in the playoffs with a win, and an El Paso loss, but it did not go as planned. Despite a 2-1 lead in the first half, United allowed two unanswered goals, which ultimately led to the game ending in a 3-3 tie.

Lobos Basketball howls again in first event of the preseason

The University of New Mexico Lobo Men and Women’s basketball teams returned to The Pit for their opening event of the preseason: The Lobo Howl — the first time in seven years the event has been held.  The Howl introduced fans to the new men’s basketball Head Coach Eric Olen, along with the entirely new team he assembled. Fans also met the head coach of the women’s team, Mike Bradbury, and his team of seven new faces and six returners. “It’s a great opportunity to engage with fans, and let them see our players for a little bit. Obviously, we don’t start for another month, but it’s cool to get a little taste of it here in early October,” Olen said.

Lobos Men’s Golf freshman wins individual title

The University of New Mexico Men’s Golf Team hosted the 70th William H. Tucker Invitational at The UNM Championship Course on Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20, for the lone home event of the season. The Lobos started strong at 18 under par, entering day two with a three-stroke lead, but after a slow start and some missed shots, the Lobos hit an even par in round three, finishing in second place behind Long Beach State, who finished -23.

Lobos take first rivalry game of the year

The University Of New Mexico soccer team faced off against their in-state rivals, the New Mexico State University Aggies on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Lobos entered the game all smiles, as Head Coach Heather Dyche was awarded prior to the game for her 100th win following their victory over the University of Oregon on Aug. 28.  The game would end on a high note as the Lobos pitched a shutout of the Aggies 4-0, giving Dyche her 102nd win.\\ The Lobos remain undefeated this season with a record of four wins and two ties.
