Editor,
It has come to my concern that Milo Yiannopoulos is actually coming to campus on Friday to speak. From what I understand from UNM’s policy concerning speakers coming to campus is that they have to have an educational purpose.
I do not consider Yiannopoulos speaking at UNM to be educational, rather discriminatory toward marginalized groups on campus such as LGBTQ members, women, Muslims and African Americans.
Besides the educational purpose policy, UNM also has a policy against hate speech. Yiannopoulos has shown hate toward women and African Americans whether it was through his articles or getting banned from Twitter, and the name of his tour “Dangerous Faggot” is hurtful toward LGBTQ members.
I would also like to mention that in light of the recent inauguration of Donald Trump causing an disrupt in these marginalized communities I do not believe that we need someone from the far right attempting to conform audience members into his racist and sexist view point. I anticipate the protests being held on Friday to shut him down.
