Growers rally for medical cannabis

Last updated: 12/10/09 12:30am

The pot pioneers of New Mexico are meeting in Santa Fe on Friday to show support for the Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis Program.

The DOH is holding the meeting to consider approving new medical conditions, including Hepatitis C, that could warrant patients having a cannabis I.D. card. As of now, patients with one of 15 medical conditions can be prescribed medical marijuana.

Larry S. Love is the organizer for the unofficial group of New Mexicans who are interested in growing medical cannabis for the more than 800 New Mexico patients who have cannabis I.D. cards.

Love has organized a patient rally to start after the 10 a.m. DOH’s meeting in the Runnels Building in Santa Fe.

“I understand that Albuquerque in general doesn’t have a lot of doctors that are willing to write a recommendation for their patients,” Love said. “So, it’s early on in the program here, and we’re all sort of pioneers. Some physicians are just a little reluctant because they have DEA licenses to write prescriptions for regular prescriptions, and medical cannabis should be considered a regular type of treatment.”

Love said he wants to help potential patients fill out their paperwork and find willing doctors.

“One of the things that I’m hoping to do in the near future is to have a clinic where people can come and get the proper paperwork if they don’t have a computer, and we’ll help them fill out their applications for the DOH,” he said. “I would like to do that at least once a week up here in Santa Fe, and if we can find a place down in Albuquerque, another day.”

Love said physicians shouldn’t worry about breaking federal laws because the doctors only write recommendations for patients, not the prescriptions themselves. Instead, the Department of Health writes the prescription, Love said.
“The federal government has now changed their position on medical cannabis and have stated that as long as someone is abiding by the state law, they will not bother doctors or growers or distributors or patients,” he said. “So, that’s a big step for helping the program, not just here in New Mexico, but also in the other states that have made medical cannabis legal.”

Love said he will also hold more meetings for “The Growers Guild” to help growers obtain the necessary applications and permits to cultivate marijuana.

“Currently, there are about 800 patients, from what I understand, and they expect to have about 1,000 or 1,100 by the end of January,” he said. “Which means they only have five people currently approved to grow, and that would only cover less than 50 percent of the patients. So, the DOH actually needs to approve five more producers ASAP.”

Love said he hopes the rally and meeting are well attended so the doctors of New Mexico feel more confident about issuing recommendations.

“This is our first step to gather patients and people that haven’t applied yet that want to apply to be a medical cannabis patient,” he said. “So, we’re showing our support for the program and trying to organize a voice for the patients of New Mexico.”

Pot growers are not an inherently valid support group for or against medical marijuana or legalization. They stand to gain monetarily and from that standpoint they mount their campaign for or against, it’s identical to capitalism. If you support capitalism then you may indeed be sympathetic to this group.

There is very little humanistic merit to this action by the “pot growers”.

There is very little “humanistic merit” or common sense in restricting the use of this remarkably safe healing herb. May I invite you all to educate yourself about the broad range of conditions that cannabis can treat? I even have medical studies to back it all up! Just run a quick search for “Granny Storm Crow’s list- July 2009” and start reading. The list of “permissible ailments” in New Mexico is pitifully short! Cannabis can do SO much more. Please take the time to learn about what cannabis can do for you and others. Thank you.

Yes THC and Green Tea will make you live until you are 100, and the check is in the mail, and I promise I’ll only stick it in a little bit. Yes indeed we need not look at any of the negatives, just praise the plant!

Thanks Granny Storm Crow!
Holly mother of all cannabis information!!!!!
I not only book marked it, I joined the Grasscity website. Great content. Very well done!!!!!
I think I shall share the site and it’s content with the other 899 patients here in New Mexico.

You know, it’s the majority of people who want cannabis reform, the rest of us thought we already had it.

An “unofficial” group? Mr. Love, I suggest you just get in line behind all the other folks who want to profit from the new program.

While the law clearly states “Not-for-profit”, do let us know who’s investing upwards of $25,000 to set up an operation to grow just 95 plants….and please also publish your books on the internet so we can see what salaries and expenses are being paid by your “unofficial group”.

The NM DOH seems to be intent on not allowing a California situation from developing here. It would be nice if other folks got the facts straight as well. While cardholders are growing by leaps and bounds, licensed producer applications are full of clerical mistakes which get them bounced. The DOH wants to issue producers licenses, but only to companies that actually qualify. If you are clever, you can find a number of licensed producer applications on the internet. A few of them are laughable at best. Some obviously prepared by attorneys.

A “prescription” can only be written for a drug that is approved by the FDA. What you get is a recommendation which the DOH reviews and then issues a “patient card”, which protects you from prosecution at the STATE level, and allows licensed producers to know you are authorized to make purchases. Get stopped at a federal checkpoint carrying marijuana, and there is good chance you will be detained, perhaps arrested.

Be wary of anybody who want to “help you” get a patient card. There is still the possibility of federal prosecution, regardless of what you’ve been told by “experts” possession is STILL illegal under federal law

Legitimate cardholders are notified by mail of the licensed producers they can purchase from. NOT the other way around.

You identify is protected by HIPPA when you deal with the state DOH and your doctors, do you really want your information being held or know to just anybody?

Eat more cheese you wonderful piece of human flesh.
Sink into the words that comfort you and bind you to the ideas you need to keep because it’s all you have. Hate and a backlog of cheese that is clogging your mind like a giant turd stuck in the toilet bow that is your life.

The rest of us thank you ahead of time for the colorful posts you will no doubt fling with great attention to detail and intent.
Mommy must be very proud.
