Football: Eck’s new era: Brotherhood, belief and the pursuit of greatness

“My dad said in one of our meetings during the spring, ‘if we put out the same effort we put out last year, we’re gonna get a worse result,’” University of New Mexico linebacker Jaxton Eck said of his father, Head Coach Jason Eck. There isn't a better way to put it, and it couldn’t be more true for the 2026 New Mexico Lobos. They’ll need a different type of effort, one much greater than last year’s 9-win season — ending in a bowl game — type of effort.  They’re aware of the year 1964, which sits embedded at the top of University Stadium; A year representing greatness, but also a reminder of the 61 straight seasons the UNM football program fell short of their goal: winning a conference championship.

OPINION: Football: Inside the Lobos’ historic rise from long shots to favorites

The Lobos’ football team has taken the field for 94 years, and not once have they entered a season as the betting-odd favorites to win the conference, until now. After hiring Head Coach Jason Eck, who led the team to just their sixth season with nine or more wins in program history and a trip to the Rate Bowl – their first bowl appearance since 2016 – the Lobos became one of the nation's top stories in all of college football.

Football: Lobos secure two commits from 2027 recruiting class

The University of New Mexico Lobos added another signal caller to the quarterback room this spring after landing 2027 3-star Bradley Cassier out of St. Monica Catholic High School in Santa Monica, California. At 6-foot-4-inches and 200 lbs, Cassier is listed as the 101st overall quarterback recruit in the nation and the 173rd overall player in the state of California, according to Profile Recruiting player rankings. Cassier chose the Lobos amid offers from schools such as Arizona State University, Washington State University, Colorado State University, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Boston College.

Former Lobos Keyshawn James-Newby drafted by Eagles; Damon Bankston signed by Giants

Born in Pocatello, Idaho, becoming a standout football player in his hometown of Helena, Montana, and now competing at the highest level of professional football in the world. Former Lobo Keyshawn James-Newby has found his opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles. On Saturday, April 25, the former Lobos defensive end became the first Lobo drafted since safety Jerrick Reed II in 2023. James-Newby is the 67th player to be drafted from the University of New Mexico all-time, and is the first Lobo defensive lineman drafted since Larry Dibbles in 1973. Football: Spring game sees team Silver escape team Cherry

If there’s one true takeaway from Saturday’s spring game, the Jason Eck effect is as real as it gets. On April 26, University Stadium saw its biggest attendance in a long time for their annual spring game. In a game of the University of New Mexico Lobos battling Lobos, it wasn’t hard to see that the defense is ahead of the offense at this point in the year. Given the returning players on defense, that should be expected.
