Former Lobos Keyshawn James-Newby drafted by Eagles; Damon Bankston signed by Giants

Born in Pocatello, Idaho, becoming a standout football player in his hometown of Helena, Montana, and now competing at the highest level of professional football in the world. Former Lobo Keyshawn James-Newby has found his opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles. On Saturday, April 25, the former Lobos defensive end became the first Lobo drafted since safety Jerrick Reed II in 2023. James-Newby is the 67th player to be drafted from the University of New Mexico all-time, and is the first Lobo defensive lineman drafted since Larry Dibbles in 1973. The Eagles selected James-Newby with the 252nd pick in the seventh round.

Football: Spring game sees team Silver escape team Cherry

If there’s one true takeaway from Saturday’s spring game, the Jason Eck effect is as real as it gets. On April 26, University Stadium saw its biggest attendance in a long time for their annual spring game. In a game of the University of New Mexico Lobos battling Lobos, it wasn’t hard to see that the defense is ahead of the offense at this point in the year. Given the returning players on defense, that should be expected.

Football: Linebackers anchor down defense during scrimmage

The Lobo football team wrapped up their third week of spring practice on Friday, April 17. The University of New Mexico held its second scrimmage throughout practice as they inch closer to their annual spring game. Linebackers kept making play after play during the scrimmage. The linebacker position has a case to be the strongest position group heading into next season.

Lobo Football reloads ahead of 2026 season

The Coach Jason Eck era in University of New Mexico Lobo football has given the city of Albuquerque a new spark when fall comes around at University Stadium. The Lobos are coming off a historical season, finished tied for second in the Mountain West conference with an overall record of 9-4 and an appearance in the Rate Bowl.  So far the Lobos are losing eight players to the transfer portal. The most notable losses come on the offensive side of the ball; tight end Dorian Thomas is heading to the University of California, Berkeley, and running back DJ McKinney will play for University of Tulsa. Standout punter Daniel Hughes is also leaving, taking his talents to Florida State University.

Lobos advance to 8-3 behind dominant defensive performance

On Saturday, Nov. 22, the University of New Mexico Lobos football team triumphed against the Air Force Academy Falcons, winning the game 20-3, and sealing the first victory at Falcon Stadium in 25 years. Lobo quarterback Jack Layne and the offense started the night off with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by Layne’s 12-yard scramble for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Then, UNM sophomore defensive tackle Jalen McIver and senior safety Caleb Coleman combined for a second down sack that led to a third-and-15 on Air Force’s opening drive, which ultimately resulted in an opening drive punt for the Falcons.  Offensive success continued for the Lobos with senior running back Damon Bankston getting involved through the air, as he had three catches for 27 yards in the first quarter alone.
