Protesters plead for peace during Requiem

Last updated: 12/10/09 12:35am

Philip Bock protested outside of Popejoy Hall on Wednesday just like he did 40 years ago.

Bock, a retired anthropology professor, held basically the same sign and had the same message, while the same performance went on inside Popejoy — Johannes Brahms’ “A German Requiem.” Forty years ago, Bock said he and a dozen other protesters stood outside the performance hall to speak against the Vietnam War.

“We didn’t argue with people,” he said. “We just thought that Vietnam was turning into a total quagmire. At that point, tens of thousands of Americans had already been killed, as well as countless Vietnamese. Again we’re on the verge of a quagmire in Afghanistan, in my opinion.”

This year, four people protested, but Bock said he didn’t plan this year’s demonstration as far in advance. He said “A German Requiem” is a piece meant to comfort the living and honor the dead.

“The chorus sings, ‘Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.’ Well, I don’t feel very comforted,” he said.

Bock said the protest is also a vigil to remember those who died in war.

“Our signs mourn for all the Americans and others who were killed in huge numbers, and will be killed if this so-called surge into Afghanistan goes ahead,” Bock said.
Eric McInteer, spokesman for college Republicans, said the war in Afghanistan is necessary to protect the U.S.

“Pakistan, just to the south, is a potentially unstable regime with very poorly secured nuclear weapons,” McInteer said. “If we fail in Afghanistan, insurgents could get their hands on nuclear weapons or nuclear material and make them, given enough time and resources. I’m worried they would actually use those weapons against us.”

McInteer said all political parties should support the war in Afghanistan, not protest against it.

“I don’t feel the need to go grab a sign and get angry at America,” he said. “I’m proud to be an American, and I just don’t have the same attitude that those people do.”

McInteer wrote a letter to the editor in the Daily Lobo with a similar message on Dec. 4.

Bock said protesting is a way to demonstrate personal opinions. He said America should have learned from past mistakes in wars like Vietnam.

“I hope to keep alive the idea that these deaths are not necessary,” he said. “War is not the answer. On my sign there is the quote, ‘When will they ever learn?’”
Bob Anderson, protester and former UNM professor, said the reactions of passersby to the protest were encouraging.

“A couple of people have walked by and said, ‘Right on; good,’” he said. “Anyone who has sympathies to understand what the Requiem is about understands the sad situation in this country.”

Thanks to all who protested or more accurately held a vigil for all who have died in our ongoing Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

War is hell, and I hate any Americans getting killed. Regardless of whether it’s in the military or not. This requiem appears to be dated if Mr. Bock demonstrated against the Viet Nam war. Those demonstrations 40 years ago did far more to turn American against American and dishonor the vets than it even came close to accomplishing for the actual war. Hopefully this will have a different outcome.

We already know Al Queda has infiltrated the American military on American soil.

Uh…it’s Brahms’ Requiem…written in about 1865. Yeah, I guess it’s a little dated..

Let’s play it for Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize prez who just escalated the war in Afganistan and who deserves an honorary membership in the GOP for continuing all of Dubya’s policies, bailouts, wars, etcs.

“Philip Bock protested outside of Popejoy Hall on Wednesday just like he did 40 years ago” This is too funny. The very definition of a swampy! smelly old hippy. Get a life.

YOU really need to get a friggin’ life, Chayal.

Your sole purpose seems to be calling everyone on this site who is not YOU a loser or an anti-Semite, depending on the circumstances. At least try to come up with another option.

Talk about pitiful.

We get it that you hate everything and everyone. That is so cutting edge! You are so cool! Do you list your #1 hobby as “attacking others anonymously on-line”? Obviously you have nothing better to do than sit on your fat ass all day scanning the DAILY LOBO for new victims to spew hate upon.

It takes A LOT of free time (and contempt for others) to mock every single letter or comment you disagree with on this site. It’s really pathetic that the only satisfaction you get out of life is putting other people down, but hey, if it empowers you and makes you feel better than everyone else to insult others anonymously – go for what you know!

So, who’s the bigger loser?
You are, clearly.

JD, why don’t you get off Chayal’s ass, we all have no respect, no admiration, no fondness, and no love for fantasy bound socialist tree huggers. What’s so difficult to understand about free men and women that don’t admire those who would be slaves?

Sam does that really matter?

Honestly I think you guys have showcased exactly what is wrong with America today, that we all are close-minded and most of us have our heads too far up our butts to have any idea about whats really going on.

This campus is supposed to be a place of higher learning. I suggest instead of insulting someone for their personal choices, you listen and grow up.

If history has taught us anything, is that it likes to repeat itself. And while I personally not opposed to this war and think it necessary, I would really not like it to turn into another Vietnam.

People will protest anything, and fight over anything. no matter what we do some will rise and say “that’s a great idea” and someone else will stand up and say “No it’s not” you cant win, and as long as you don’t give up you never truly lose. stand up for what makes you feel right cause odds are in 100 years nobody will remember you anyways

LOL!!! That’s wonderful! Did you make that up yourself?

Turns out I have no respect for dumbass elitist neo-fascist racist life-haters, so this works out perfectly!

As they say, “The best slave is one who thinks he’s free.”

That would be you, SLOWHIKE.

I find it odd that you defend the childish, moronic insults of CHAYAL and your own hateful rhetoric to such a degree. What is there to defend about anonymously insulting people you don’t agree with? You and CHAYAL are the worst examples of narrow minded ignorance pretending to be smart. At least DAMIAN and Phillip Howell try to formulate counter-arguments; you pathetic creatures only want to pour derision on others in order to satisfy your black, evil souls.

You obviously have no love at all in your life for anything, except for mommy & daddy and maybe the 6 other people who agree with you on this site…I almost feel sorry for you.

Hey Slowhike, thanks. You are a gentleman and a scholar, unlike the LLLs whom I shall not mention by name. Been out of town for Chanukah and lost track of stuff on the daily loser. Though I usually don’t respond to whiney girly-man types, their words always reveals them for what they are and I don’t want to encourage them. I admit I find it amusing to goad them into foaming at the mouth hissy fits—its just tooo easy.

G-d bless you and yours this Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hey JD I love life buddy, why would you think otherwise. The fact that I disagree with your outlook on life does not dispell my admiration and affinity for life itself. It’s just that Freedom is my nationality in a general sense.

I am concerned about your relational issues, you obviously have parental authority challenges that you have been unable or unwilling to deal with. I would say a mild- moderate case of narcissim and adversity to authority.

Your personal assaults and choice of adolescent-like verbage would indicate a very young age or perhaps adversion to the maturation obstacles encountered in college. I think you still have a ball to drop or some Father-angst to overcome. I suggest a Men’s group or some looking into pragmatic philosophy to better understand the world we live in.

Your black and white, either or descriptoins are Bush like, you know the axis of evil thingy. Try to comprehend that it is “Both-And” not “either-or” that we are all needing to deal with.

Other than that, there’s no charge for this on-line session, now you go out and have a merry Christmas ya hear.

So, you’re a psychologist now, BLOWHARD? I knew you were an expert at everything! How wonderful to be you!

Parental issues? I’m 46 years old, so nah, don’t think so.
Maturation obstacles? Huh? I started college well into my thirties, and I’d been married for about 15 years by then…so, no again. A ‘men’s group’? What, like the ‘promise keepers’ or some other crap? Thanks, but I prefer the company of women. They tend to have a better outlook on life, anyway…and they are a lot smarter than most men.

I DO absolutely have an adversity to authority. Something you could probably benefit from. And now you are projecting MY description of YOUR world view onto me (the B&W thing). Nice try.

My world view is based on many years of research and living through many years of history…and studying it and remembering it. Growing up as I did in the Vietnam / Watergate era gave me a healthy distrust of all politicians and all governments, and a disgust for pointless wars. You, on the other hand, choose to believe that only liberals are at fault for all the world’s problems…which can be solved by simply killing our enemies…which is very, very naive to say the least.

It’s time to give up the fairy tales of childhood and enter the real world, where there is no government to protect you, and there is no difference between liberals or conservatives – they just play loyal opposition to each other to maintain the facade of democracy for the sake of the ignorant American populace. This is pretty damn obvious to anyone who can observe reality objectively.

We are a corporate state run by and for corporations, not people. Your unflagging support of the for-profit corporate state proves that your philosophy is essentially anti-human.

From your previous posts it’s easy to see that you do in fact hate life and all non-white living beings.

I do not need your advice to understand the world we live in, but thanks anyway. My world is filled with beauty, complexity, subtlety, nuance and wonder. Your world fits neatly into your nice little pseudo-racist/fascist ideological box.

On another post you stated that all Mexicans know their country sucks and they have no national pride. Total rubbish! As if Americans are the only people who take pride in their country. I mean, really.

You make up most of this shit based on your bigotry and hatred of people and cultures you don’t understand. Have you ever been to another country? Do you KNOW any Mexicans? If not, you really need to shut the hell up, because clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Freedom is your nationality! What a joke. Like I said, the best slave is one who thinks he’s free. You are nothing but a REALLY GOOD slave, my friend.

Good luck in the future. This is the last time I will reply to you.

Have a great Holiday – hopefully one free from homosexuals, negroes and Mexicans.

I want to post a thank you to folks like Phil Bock who stand out in the cold and direct our attention to the deaths that war brings, whether in the 60s or in 2009. We need more like him. Vigils that recognize those who die forgotten and unnoticed in a war, many of them children, is exactly what we need to see right now, everywhere we turn, after so many years of war to “protect our interests”, which means to protect our decision to control the world’s resources to protect our greed as a nation.

Kudos to you, Phil, both for your vigil in 1969 and your vigil in 2009.

Thanks to JD for his friendly comments about our Requiem vigil. The Republican spokesman clearly missed the point of our “mourning for ALL the war dead,” and simply spouted his usual talking points. This “smelly old hippy” taught anthro at UNM for thirty years and hates to see the errors of Vietnam repeated. Peace.

Thank goodness we still have real men here in the USA, even a few in New Mexico. If it weren’t for them phil bock, JP and JD wouldn’t have the right to protest against the military and their endeavors.
