Fire-and-brimstone preacher was just speaking the truth
Editor,
In response to David Luna’s letter in the Lobo on Monday, “UNM should not allow hatemongering on campus:”
First off, David, in your letter you said we all understand free speech and freedom to worship, but this doesn’t give us a license to say whatever we want whenever we want.
Excuse me, but, yes it does.
You also said Shawn the Baptist continued to tell the UNM community, and not just homosexuals this time, that God abhorred them because they were sinners and that they were doomed to spend eternity in hell because of the way they lived their lives.
Excuse me again, but that’s exactly what God said. Read your Bible.
I’m sure Shawn is not a hater of people. I’m sure he loves people. That’s why he does what he does. I’m sure he hates the sin and not the sinner.

God said that?… I think I’ll stay away from the pink cool-aide.
The Bible is subjective; you can take it however you want. If someone want’s to believe in a deity which implies Homosexual malice- so be it. However, I’d rather believe in something that does not instate a deity within a theological belief as ‘a priori.’
If god hates Homosexuals; did God himself sit down and write the Bible?

PS *A priori= St. Anselm’s Ontological Argument- find the paradox for yourself.
Freedom of speech is fun: Wisdom to allow for such is even better!

How long O Lord, how long. When, in the process of becoming an educated human being, will we obtain some degree of wisdom that will inform our thinking and elevate it above an emotional diatribe that originates from some primeval superstition that blinds to the beauty of our fellow travelers on life’s awesome journey? I just keep hearing this oft abused Jesus saying that if we don’t love him in each other then we truly don’t love him. That’s not touchy feely religion, that’s hard as hell and a daily task that weighs heavily on each of us if we truly want to be seen as his followers. I leave you with, “Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”

Whether what shawm the baptist says is true or not is irrelevant to his ulterior motive. Maybe he really believes in what he says, no one has a say in the matter, but one thing is for sure; anyone who is emotionaly suaded by his words, either towards or against, will be pressured by someother person that feels the opposite.
Its the tactit of divide and conquer. When we create enemies with our neighbors we stop fighting for the people and only care for ourselves. We can not stop a tyranny if we are not united.

Religion is an infection.
People don’t study, learn and then choose their religion – they are infected as children by their infected parents. 95% of all religious people are the SAME as their parents – even though there are more than 4,000 different religions.

If someone really wants to believe in something, study the thousands of “stories,” and then pick one. Inheriting your beliefs is lazy and ignorant.

Freedom of speech has its limits. As with any freedom, once you encroach on others freedoms then you have gone too far.

Exuse me, no it doesn’t. Are you saying that it is acceptable for someone to yell FIRE unnecessarily in a crowded movie theater? Speech with the intent to harm is never acceptable. Shawn the Baptist is using his religion as an exuse to say whatever he wants, wherever he wants no matter how much it offends people.

Sara,
My hats off to you. Of all the retoric being splattered against this wall yours is the only words that stuck. If the words of a street preacher insites someone to do another harm, than that preacher should be held liable. Words hurt, words do harm, and only a public school educations will argue that fact. Freedom of speach does not allow you to say what ever where ever you want. It was never intended to do such.

Sorry Steve, but I will not read my bible. That’s not the point.
The point is that we live in a society, not a church. Just because your particular holy book says something does not make it the law of the land.

Your religion is not the only one, and it’s awfully arrogant to be so sure that it’s the “right” one.

Of course, I was attacked on this site for quoting Noam Chomsky (because he’s an ANARCHIST of all things, according to some dumb-ass):
“If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.”

I wholeheartedly agree. I guess that makes me an anarchist.
So be it.

Shawn – when you tell people that they are going to Hell most people’s automatic response (whether they articulate it or not) is that you don’t have the authority to send anyone to Hell! Only God has that right! God doesn’t care one bit about your suggestions about who should go either. All Hell-fire and Damnation preaching will accomplish is alienating, angering, or frightening your fellow students; not exactly ways to bring people closer to God. Instead you should show the love, compassion, and grace of God that we all need. Finally, a reminder from Romans 2:1 “Judge not lest ye be judged”. Whenever we pridefully proclaim another’s eternal destiny we invite harsher judgement on ourselves. I for one would rather find Grace on judgement day, so I try to imitate the God’s Grace instead.

To All who want to limit Shawn because you choose to be offended by something he says, I ask why do you choose to listen to him? Why do you choose to be offended or hurt? I can disagree with you without being hurt by your words. If you find mine hurtful to you maybe you need to ask yourself why do you react so. You do not go to hell because Shawn says so. You do not become something because I say you are. If I have that power don’t you want me to say you are great, you will become Bill Gates rich this Thursday or would Saturday be better?
JD way to go. Home run on this one.

It is nice to see a place where dissenting viewpoints are not squashed. I may be somewhat of an anomaly, but I consider my self a Christian yet I have gay friends of both sexes. They have never tried to “convert” me to their lifestyle. I have never had a random gay person get in my face and tell me that I am oppressing them and I am a bad person. They have their booth in the SUB to raise money for their functions that are held on campus. I have also seen Christian groups do the same thing here as well. I cannot tell anybody with a degree of certainty if both groups recieve UNM funding.
I would like to offer a suggestion to both camps. If somebody around you is saying something you don’t want to hear, ignore them and walk away. UNM is a large campus. It is not that hard to go somewhere else.

Don Schrader, or as my son calls him “nekkid hippie queer pee guy”, was well reported in the Daily Lobo. So was an article on anal sex. These aren’t exactly mainstream topics. Maybe someday we will read about one of the convents or monasteries in this state.
Lighten up folks. I may not like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it.

The Word of God says in the book of Romans that “ALL have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God”. So I feel very upset about what this “Shawn the Baptist” guy is doing on our campus. He is NO ONE to condemn or judge people in such a cynical fashion.
What angers me the most is that he is dragging the name of my Lord JC in the mud, and if I see him doing this in person I will stop him in his tracks.

To all those that get offended by what this guys shouts, here’s a great idea: DON’T LISTEN! This guy has every right to do what he is doing and you have every right not to listen.
No one gets angry when the QSA gets to spray their pretty rainbows and posters every on campus, expecting tolerance from the world. Yet one guy shouts something you guys don’t agree with and you bark at him like a pack of dogs.
