UNM's Hispanic community: We will never surrender!

Last updated: 02/18/10 12:31am

Editor,
Thank you all for commenting on the opinion letter written by Patricia Roybal Caballero. Hopefully you can be present during a DREAM Act forum where the League of United Latin American Citizens will be sponsoring the event alongside El Centro de la Raza, and MexSA sometime in April.
It is actually quite sad that the majority of this state’s students do not have the resources or equal opportunities to consider themselves higher-education students as you all do.
It is that ignorant, selfish attitude that we Hispanics battle every day and will continue to do so until we have achieved equal representation. It is politically correct to say there is power in numbers, something Hispanics in this state are not short of.
Opponents of equality, hear this: We will not stop. We will never surrender the noble fight for our people.
Hope to see you at our forum to discuss a path to citizenship for immigrant students. Announcements for the set date of the forum will be in the Daily Lobo sometime next week.

Celestino Caballero
Secretary UNM LULAC Young Adults Council #8057

This is a country governed by laws and a Constitution. You are welcome to campaign for changes to those laws, but breaking those you do not like is not an option.

There should not be anyone on campus who is in this country illegally. Foreign students may come to the US to study on a student visa; and there are several routes for legal immigration if they wish to apply.

Hispanics are not better than everyone else, but this type of action group tries to make the case that they are better than Caucasian families. They campaign for special rights, not equal rights. If you are an American citizen, or you are visiting this country legally, you already have the rights that every American or legal visitor have.

Why do some people persist in this ‘I want to be here, therefore I can break your law’ thinking? Is that fair to the millions of people from around the world who would like to live here, but rather than enter illegally do so through the legal immigration system? Immigration should be for all, not just Hispanics; but it must be controlled by law as it is in every other country.

Stop looking for entitlement; this is not an entitlement society. It is one built on aspiration, and hard work.

Wow. Didn’t realize we were at war with Hispanics. Hey Celestino, how about working WITH others to further your cause? Most educated people are for helping everyone get a better education.

You did not realize the war because you are blinded by your white privilege.

When you begin to understand the uphill battle that minorities face, which if you are white and male you most likely never will, you will know that without access to resources, and facing attitudes like yours that it is nearly impossible to get anywhere.

How about YOU work with the Latin community in non-oppressive ways to help advance their cause instead of making it harder? Drop your self-imposed sense of justice and look at WHY those laws were made in the first place. Most likely to justify crappy privileged attitudes like yours.

Entitled to what exactly? An education? Health care? A job? Feeding their families and themselves? To leave crushing poverty? Entitled to the quality of life you so blithely take for granted? The life YOU feel entitled to simply because you were born here?

Minorities are in no way “entitled.” However, white people like to say they are so they can continue being entitled to say that.

UNM Student-I’m sorry, did I say I was a white male??? See it’s attitudes like that that get the backlash you are “fighting” against. I’m surprised my comments come off as a “crappy privileged attitude”. I do work with the Latino and other minority communities daily (in non-oppressive ways) to help advance education. So are you saying you are entitled to assistance, help, etc. just because you assume I am a white male?

To Celestino: Bravo.

To Danny Lee: I encourage everyone to break unjust and oppressive laws whenever they can. I welcome “illegal” students at UNM. I’m horrified that the authorities have been able to deport people from our campus. With the proper level of solidarity, we could prevent that. We shouldn’t let them kidnap our fellow community members. If you see a deportation happening, call your friends and get in the way.

I think it would be safe to bet that Celestino is an illegal immigrant himself. He may even be one of those “coyotes” that shepherd other criminals into this country, that is when he isn’t getting drunk off tequila bought by our white guilt liberals who steal money from hardworking Americans and redistribute it to parasites.

Send immigrant officers to the LULAC and you’ll have illegals fleeing in all directions like the roaches they are. If you want equality then you should first be equal. I assume the mexicans reading this won’t have the cognitive abilities to grasp what is obvious.

When the Hispanics get off their high horse and realize they do not have any power in this country, they will be much better off. You do not gain respect through bragging about your illegal activities or moaning and crying about how bad you have it here. Rallying and ranting about “rights” (of which you have none) for illegal aliens will never get you far. Working for slave wages only hurts yourself and the other legal citizens who you undercut when you steal their jobs. Americans believe in laws and have absolutely NO RESPECT for those who cirumvent those laws to mooch off another government. The Mexicans should be ashamed that their own homeland is an arm pit of a country so much so that you must flee, instead of trying to make it a better place. Why not stay and help salvage your own land instead of coming to a different country that you will ruin as you did your own. Americans will never accept another amnesty (as we proved in 2007), do not believe in giving illegals or their anchors any entitlements, such as in-state tuition. We are sick of illegals creating anchor babies so they can skip on the hospital bill, mooch benefits like free education, school lunches, food stamps, using expensive ER’s as your own dr. office, etc. Then moan and cry about breaking up your families when the big bad US gov’t finds you and deports you for your lawbreaking ways. Please GET OVER YOURSELVES and realize that Americans do not respect Mexicans due to the illegals and those who support them – and never will. You are giving the good, honest, law-abiding Hispanics a bad name. You want respect – EARN IT. Take your families and go back to your country, apply for citzenship in the proper manner and wait until you are worthy of becoming an American. Until then, shut your pie-holes. Nobody cares what you have to say !!

Summer Speaker,

You should not encourage illegal behavior, as any of your friends who impede a deportation can also be arrested as well. We do not reward those who break our laws, especially illegal aliens.

Celestino – we will fight you more and more, people are getting tired of this nonsense, and with numerous Democratic failures, we shall deport more and more of these trespassing parasites. If you come here, you do it respectfully and properly, you don’t just jump a border because you can.

SUMMER SPEAK’s message is the ANARCHISTS’; find a law that interferes with your pleasure, break it and then holler discrimination and oppression as you are handcuffed.

SUMMERSPEAK either doesn’t understand the French and Russian Revolutions were the work of the ANARCHIST- as are all Marxist revolutions- or he supports the violence that is inherent to them. I wonder what he meant by, “If you see a deportation happening, call your friends and get in the way.” And when the police say ‘stop interfering with the enforcement of Constitutionally correct laws’ what, SUMMERSPEAK, are the “friends” supposed to do?

Tens of thousands of French were murdered by the mobs that were led by ANARCHIST’s; tens of millions murdered by the disciples of Marx. And the results are governments that are oppressive just as exists today in Cuba, China and other places where people who followed the ideas of SUMMERSPEAK found enough followers to overthrow the government instead of fixing the problems at the ballot box.

Every nation has the right to pass laws that regulate who can enter their country and under what circumstances. Illegal immigrants from any nation should be immediately returned to their country. NO illegal immigrant should be allowed to receive any benefit from the citizens of this nation other than emergency medical care that stabilizes their condition.

Education paid for by the citizens of the USA is not an entitlement for someone who enters this country illegally or their children. Removing the incentives will take away the reasons to come here illegally. People who care to improve their situation will have a reason to fix the problems of their home country .

WE should not be the way station for people who come here to only improve their situation with their allegiance and loyalty to another country.

Passport needed in Mexico now. It used to be that all you needed was a driver’s license to go to Juarez and then a Birth Certificate to enter the interior. When you left Mexico, the Border Guard would ask you a question to test your accent and quick response but they rarely checked your paperwork.

Try crossing into Mexico without a passport now. Try traveling around Mexico without one and see what happens! Can you negotiate with the Mexican police by saying “Where’s your compassion?”

Every country requires that you have a passport so why is ours different?

These “Hispanic” groups are also racist just by their very name and that the writer says: “We will never surrender the noble fight for our people.” By helping only your people, you are discriminating against another people.

ANY GROUP THAT LABELS THEIR GROUP BY RACE, ARE RACISTS!!!

To me the DREAM Act is analogous to a wolf in sheep’s clothing within our education system and let me explain why:

I am a Mexican American whose parents entered this country LEGALLY. We obeyed all the laws of the US Immigration and Naturalization Department, all of us became legal permanent US residents in 2001 and I became a US citizen in 2007. Last year I successfully graduated with my BSME degree with a decent GPA.

And now I’m about to begin my master’s degree at Arizona State University. Therefore, I believe that I earned every single dime that I received from the US Department of Education to cover all of my tuition expenses during my undergrad years at UNM. Why? Because I paid my dues to American society and obeyed American immigration laws, and because I really want to contribute something significant as an engineer to our society.

The DREAM Act, if approved by Congress, would allow the children of ILLEGAL Mexican immigrants to receive tuition funds from the US Dept. of Education to get a college degree. In other words, it’s a subtle form of AMNESTY. I don’t care what country you’re from, that is just plain WRONG on so many levels! I believe that all college students in America should AT LEAST be legal US residents to receive tuition funds from the federal gov’t.

I’m a third generation Hispanic American, I speak both English and Spanish and I’m proud to be an American. I must confess’s, somehow my Hispanic roots still linger within me and I would never advice my children or their offspring’s to abandon them. Too much well deserved pride which has been earned by a rich history.
They are well inbred-ed within our people and no matter where we go they will always resurface. We are here and our intention are to make America a better country. If that’s a problem to those who share a lesser heritage history and pride. Well! that’s your problem, You deal with it. No apologies here.

@Beast: They can’t arrest everybody. If we had widespread community commitment against deportation, they would start thinking twice. And getting arrested, as horrible as it is, can be useful media tool if handled properly.

@Phillip Howel: They should interfere actively but without hurting anyone. Stand in the away, lock arms with the deportation victim and your comrades, smash the vehicles intended to take the target away. That sort of thing.

First, La Raza is a racist group. Who do they think they are?

The DREAM ACT. My dream act would be for all the illegal aliens to get out of this country and back in their own country where they belong! Who do these illegal aliens think they are to snub their nose at our laws. Look at obama’s aunt. She was ordered out of the country twice and just snubbed her nose and said she was staying. She is living in public housing, getting food stamps and FREE healthcare and she has NO RIGHT to be in this Country!

I sure hope the new Arizona State Illegal Immigration law passes. We have to get these illegal aliens out of this country! I’m from Delaware and we are pushing to get the Oklahoma State Illegal Immigration LAw, HB 1804, passed here. We have had it with the illegal aliens. They are destroying this State…they are destroying this Country!

SUMMERSPEAKER you are advocating (1) the destruction of public property: “smash the [police] vehicles”, (2) interfering with law enforcement officials in their performance of their sworn duty to uphold the law: “Stand in the away, lock arms with the deportation victim and your comrades,” (3) Your words-“getting arrested…can be useful media tool if handled properly,” is the proof of what I SAID: “holler discrimination and oppression as you are handcuffed” all of which are the trademarks of the ANARCHIST.

ANARCHIST’S are violent, evil people. They cannot persuade the people to support their radical ideas so they break the laws intended to protect us from criminals and provide for an orderly society. Every time the ANARCHIST protest— most recently at the Olympic games— they burn cars, break shop windows, set fires and attack the police. They terrorize and harm those who work in stores when they shatter the windows, set their fires with fire bombs, loot. Their violent acts cause businesses to close until the damage is repaired and new inventory is bought to replace what they destroyed or stole. The result is the working people lose their jobs, their incomes and the cost of doing business increases. WE pay for their evil acts.

ANARCHIST people are not honorable protesters seeking change that benefits all; they are hoodlums who harm and maim to get their own way.

I think when Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of equality, he did not mean preferential treatment. I would be for fighting along with the hispanics if they recognized the plight of all other ethnic groups. Native americans face more discrimination than any other group, even though they are the only people native to this country. African americans are still not a equal levels. It will take much longer for equality if everyone chooses to fight individually.

Americans gain Billion of US dollars from threatening immigrants Invertors
and Home owners from Europeen Countries.

Miss use from fear and misuse of trust used from immigrants.
Government employers and Immigrant Attorneys have done this from those
who want to establish a Legal responsible life, these are the practices.

Billions of Dollars got taken away from those who established a life.
Undocumented Workers Give $7 Billion Annually to Social Security
The norm of this treatment to immigrant is the worth in this country.

The norm of US citizens credit, is who the most lean out of their credit windows,
so far that they has no control of their own financial responsibility.
This is why Millions lost their homes.

The report of Farmer in the US shows that no American worker
Won’t pick Apples or Cabbage and work 8 to 10 Hours a day.
The same with cleanup work for trash ect.. ect..

“Without the help of immigrant labor, the US economy would virtually collapse.
We want and need cheap immigrant labor, but we do not want the immigrants.”

Even during the ongoing recession, immigration reform legislation that legalizes
undocumented immigrants would boost the American economy, according to a new
study out of UCLA.

The report said that legalization, along with a program that allows for future
immigration based on the labor market, would create jobs, increase wages and
generate more tax revenue. Comprehensive immigration reform would add an estimated
$1.5 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product over 10 years, according
to the report.

Cato Institute
This study finds that increased enforcement and reduced low-skilled immigration
have a significant negative impact on the income of U.S. households.
Modest savings in public expenditures would be more than offset by losses in
economic output and job opportunities for more skilled American workers.
A policy that reduces the number of low-skilled immigrant workers by 28.6
percent compared to projected levels would reduce U.S. household welfare
by about 0.5 percent, or $80 billion.

In contrast, legalization of low-skilled immigrant workers would yield
significant income gains for American workers and households. Legalization
would eliminate smugglers’ fees and other costs faced by illegal immigrants.
It would also allow immigrants to have higher productivity and create more
openings for Americans in higher skilled occupations. The positive impact
U.S. households of legalization under an optimal visa tax would be 1.27
percent of GDP or $180 billion.

That’s an even more optimistic outlook than the UCLA study, adding $1.8
trillion to the GDP over 10 years.

That’s a lot of new jobs.

Yes, Phillip, I’m an anarchist. It’s the bosses who are the violent ones, not us. Coercion drives the entire economic and social system. If you honestly oppose violence, look to the oppressors. Anarchist resistance comes as a response to the aggression all around.

I would like to start off by stating that i am from a family of LEGAL immigrants and i also have married a LEGAL immigrant. My mom is German and my father is Spanish. My husband is Romanian. Let me tell you how proud they all were when they finally got their American Citizenship. Wow, they were so PROUD! They deserved it, they waited for many years, in fact my brother in law is just now getting his Visa, waiting for over 15 years for it. They did it the right way and they were all criminal checked and health checked. We have no idea who is in our country, gangs, child molesters, drug dealers and we need to know that we are not just importing criminals and poverty. There are many countries poorer than Mexico. The illegal aliens who have babies here and we pay for their birth, schooling, medical care etc., that is a crime against all American taxpayers. All Illegal Aliens, GO HOME, PLEASE. We do not need you or want you here. Your anchor babies need to go with you as you knew what you were doing when you had them here.

The difference between an immigrant and an alien is, an immigrant waits patiently and properly to enter into this country. An alien jumps, walks, crawls, swims, and farts him/her self over the border.
