Trish Montoya walks her dog Isabeau as police investigate an alleged homicide that occured in an alleyway off of Tijeras and Cedar Street NE. Montoya lives across the street from where the alleged homicide occured. “I think this was more of a random act of violence,” Montoya said, “I don’t feel like I have a reason to feel any less safe.”

Man found dead near University
Albuquerque Police are investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old man whose body was discovered in a west University residential area near Copper Avenue and Cedar Street N.E. on Tuesday evening.
According to APD spokeswoman Nadine Hamby, officers prounced Miguel Barragan dead on the scene after they found the body in the alleyway north of Presbyterian Hospital around 9:30 p.m.
The body had multiple gunshot wounds and appeared to have been dropped off in the area, away from the location of the actual crime, Hamby said.
At the scene, APD’s Mobile Crime Unit held four male witnesses in custody. They were each let go and are not considered suspects, Hamby said.
Barragan has no immediate family in Albuquerque and it is unclear what he was doing in the city, she said.
A resident in the area first reported the body to APD as an unconscious individual. Officers tried to resuscitate Barragan before he was pronounced dead, according to Hamby.
This is the most aggressive crime reported this year in the residential area five blocks west of University Blvd. Typically, most criminal activity occurs across the street near the Presbyterian Hospital, according to the APD crime blotter.
In 2010, 65 crimes have been reported there, according to APD. However, only three crimes have been reported on the block where the body was found, indicating that crime rarely crosses over to the residential area.
Trish Montoya lives across the street from where Barragan’s body was found and she agrees this was an isolated incident.
“I’ve only seen one other violent thing around the area,” she said. “A couple of months ago some one started a car on fire and it exploded, but again that seemed like a random act of violence.”
At this point, APD has no suspects in custody involved in Barragan’s death and the case remains active, Hamby said.

You need to work faster. A real journalist would have had this done within 6 hours. Good luck getting into the big leagues, pal, your going to need it!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Shaun is a great guy. He probably put a lot of time and effort into this article. I also really appreciate the effort the editor has put into the paper. And, overall very pleased with the product. Its one of my favorite papers to read when I come back to New Mexico on vacation.
Unfortunately, this kid is going to be a hack. The only professional source he quoted was a spokeswoman (who is employed to actively seek out Shaun). At best this article could be considered a mouthpiece favor for the police department. Shaun, you can’t just copy and paste your way through life. Don’t take the slacker way out.

You should be ashamed. Keep on trying and I’m sure you can get better. I look forward to reading you future articles.

Five blocks south of university Blvd? University runs North/South, so I don’t really understand what this writer means. Get a map Shaun.

The five tenants of journalism are who, what, where, when and why. This article answers all those questions.
What else do you expect to find in this story without sensationalizing the death of a young man, Kevin?

Check out coverage from the other news orgs in the city and notice that each has about the same information on the case. In fact, the Lobo story has more.
KOB says they will follow with continuing coverage but there is nothing new to answer…http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S1566300.shtml?cat=504
KRQE doesn’t even print the name of the man found…http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/local/central/apd-investigate-homicide-near-hospital
There is nothing in the Journal.
Other than Hamby, I doubt Shaun has had enough time to develop relationships with sources inside the police department to get other information. I’m sure it takes years for journalists to get that cozy with an officer willing to talk.
What other professional sources are there to contact when the police are the only ones on the scene?
I do agree the story should have run earlier, but again, it’s summer. The kid is probably working for free anyway. Enjoy your summer Shaun, and don’t let trolling turds like Kevin discourage your work.

SHAUN, your story was fine, the geography error not withstanding. The good news is you are learning early that press people are targets. Half of the people will disagree with you most of the time. My only suggestion is to be sure the information you are depending on is true and complete and understand the bias of the source.

what i like about this story is how much information it lacks and presumes to know. (just cuz your a reporter doesnt mean you know everything) i mean whats the guys age? is he an albuquerque resident? did you even talk to his neighbors? more importantly did you talk to family or friends? it is funny though how when one of our own unm professors died this reporter seemed to know EVERYTHING about the victim. even going so far as to clearly identify him without saying his name for more than 500 words. so why make so much effort then but on all of the other victims not? what makes one persons life more important than anothers?

There’s a rumor on campus that this “Shaun Griswold” is not a real person, but is in fact the code-name for a computer program developed by the engineering dept. that takes raw information and generates news stories.
This would explain the time it took for the story to be published, given the limitations of voice-recognition software. It also explains the “geography error:” a computer cannot walk, and, therefore, would not have ever been to University Blvd.

I cannot speak to the journalistic ethics potentially being violated here, but if this story is true, even “Shaun’s” critics would have to admit it’s pretty impressive.

To shlep:
The five TENETS, not TENANTS, of journalism are . . . (unless, of course, you own an apartment building and your tenants are named Who, What, When, Where and Why. Or, perhaps you are working on a new version of a Laurel and Hardy comedy routine).
