Fire Locksley, so we can rebuild the team

Last updated: 09/07/10 1:05am

Editor,

The Lobo football team’s 72-0 loss to Oregon on Saturday was a disgrace to the University, the city of Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico. Mike Locksley is a poor coach and an even poorer leader. After the events of last year, he has not shown that he holds high standards for himself, so why should his football team? The players, students and fans deserve better than this. Locksley should be fired now so that the rebuilding can start anew without wasting any more time.

If we fire Locksley, they are just going to have to pay some guy even more, taking even more money from the university.

@ Regina. That is poor reasoning. A poor football product is also taking money from the University in the form of unsold tickets and donors that will not open their checkbook for an inferior product. If Locksley continues to show an inability to coach this team- then it is time to just cut him loose and find someone who will. It is performances like this that make the teams in the conference that are providing some legitimacy to the Mountain West want to leave like Utah and BYU have.

0-72 that says it all this Locks guy just doesn’t have what it takes to be a coach on any level.

What an embarrassment our football team is all because a few inept people decided to look the other way when the writing was on the wall.

I don’t think Regina is completely off base. Ironically, the poor economy saved a lot of college football jobs last year. Rich Rodriquez the head coach at Michigan was on the chopping block but a 50% decrease in alumni and booster donations ( a good portion of where a head coaches salary comes)put the University in a financial bind. UNM is in that same bind, just on a smaller scale. If things were fair Locksley would owe us money. When there is a 72-0 disparity between two D1 schools there is a fundamental problem with the latter’s program. Locksley seems to suggest that a missed assignment here and a poor tackle there were the differences in the game. I would suggest that he is out of touch with his own team.

I honestly feel sorry for the players that they have to put up with having Locksley as a coach.

He’s on a six-year contract, $750K annually. Why the hell is my university investing $4.5 million in this? Especially when they “can’t afford to buy” more than one pair of latex gloves per Biology lab student…

In agreement with Tommy, I have been a long time supporter of the Lobos since Rocky Long was HC. Not only will I no longer donate I have not attended a Lobo football game since Locksley has been HC UNM should count this as a lose and severe ties with Locksley.

Look, it takes 4 years to build a program. Like it or not, you don’t want to set a precedent of firing coaches after 1 season. I mean, look at the youth on the team. Those guys will gain experience and skill over time. So if people aren’t knowledgeable enough to realize that it takes time to implement a new program (you don’t want him sticking with Rocky’s scheme do you?), then they’re not football fans. BTW…I’m from Wisconsin, and they went thru it before Barry Alvarez was hired. Barry went 1-10 his first year, 0-8 in Big 10 conference play, and went on to win 3 Rose Bowls during his 16 years at Wisconsin. He finished with a record of 118-73. Sure, Locks is a jerk, but so was Woody Hayes…

Locksley has never been a successful Division 1 HC even though he is paid like one!

Fire UNM administrators Schmidly, Krebs, Locksley, Gonzales and Garbiso, hire someone who is honest and intelligent enough to do their job. These clowns are overpaid and highly incompetent.

If we don’t get rid of this coach the stands at University Stadium will be nearly empty on game day 0-72 who wants to see that… it’s so depressing.

The reputation of the College is at stake here. This College and the Mountain West have come a long way to earn respect from other D1 colleges. Mostly, through the efforts of the football success at schools like Utah, BYU and TCU. UNM with Rocky Long brought respectable back to UNM and gave the College a real chance of success. Thank you, thank you, Rocky Long! Rocky L. sacraficed so much for UNM when he could have left for other opportunities at several other Colleges. The UNM board, Athletic Director whatever is higher than the “Coach” is the problem. Who hires the coach? What is it that makes them all eventually leave? And will the next Coach be hired/interviewed in the bathroom?

This is absurd, Why hasn’t the AD Krebs and Coach Locksley been fired? No one is buying the B—-S—— they are selling. Neither am I buying season football tickets.

Gabby: Because of the three C’s – they are all cowardly, corrupt crooks.

Krebs was too corrupt – and afraid to fire Locksley. Schmidly, in turn, is too corrupt and cowardly to fire Krebs.

Same goes for the Regents who kiss Schmidly’s butt. Afraid to make real demands of him.

You know kids, real leaders sometimes have to make tough, even unpopular decisions. All the more infuriating then that these inept administrators are afraid to make a personnel decision (firing the coach) that would probably be cheered.

Cowards, all of them.

UNM has never had a good football program… I am not sure why this is such a shock. It is also not entirely the coach’s fault … it has to do with recruiting… and no one wants to come to a desert school with not much fan or alumni support to speak of. Players flock to the Southern schools of the Big 12 (Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma) and the SEC. There is a lot of tradition in these schools and a strong and loyal fan base, not to mention TONS of money! So, as I am as upset with Locksley as the next guy… look at what he is working against.

Actually, in the early 1960’s UNM had a very good football program. In fact, I believe it was one of those early ’60’s teams that finished in the top 15 polls at the end of the season. Of course, at that time the coach was a class act by the name of Bill Weeks, a very honorable man who, subsequent to retirement had a position in the UNM administration.

With few exceptions, commuter schools rarely become big time football powers. Before someone counters me with a rising Cincinnati or Louisville, note I clearly state, “ With few exceptions…….”

So, all those pedantic sorts out there, take heed.

The problem is that the inept administration FAILED to fire Locksley when they had the chance last year. He BREACHED his contract but they were too cowardly to admit they made a mistake in hiring him. Now, if they cut him loose, they will have to buy out his contract, AND hire a new coach at an even more unreasonable salary. Regent Koch is so all about athletics, he is driving this university into the ground (student services at south campus for the athletes convenience, and dorms on south campus for the athletes convenience) and he has the patsy Schmidly to do his bidding. UNM is doomed until Schmidly, Koch, Harris, and all the other governor’s cronies are gone from UNM for good.

Look…the 72-0 drubbing UNM took on Saturday is not the end of the world! According to the odds makers the Lobos were expected to lose by 35 points anyway to the 11th ranked team in the country (at their home field)so I’m not exactly sure what you really expected???. Remember, this is a GAME and these are YOUNG ADULTS, not pros, so taking cheap shots at the program, the players, the coaches, and the administration shows just how immature you really are as NON-FANS. Furthermore, Saturday’s butt-kicking is not a death sentence to the reputation of the University so why don’t you show us some other corny ways you can make yourselves look stupid. I suggest all of you whiners and complainers take your smack and leave town until after the season and leave those of us who want to see this program grow and mature alone. I, for one, will be at ALL of the home games this year like I have been for the past 10 years cheering this group of young men on and hoping for some wins and and improvement in the program. Hey, here’s a novel idea…why don’t all of you naysayers join us IN the stadium cheering the team on rather than sitting around OUTSIDE the stadium drinking beer and making fools out of yourselves. Oh, I forgot, this is Albuquerque and that’s how you do things around here.

Fire Krebs….that is smart and lose Alford in the process? Look at comments made when he signed the new deal… “As long as Krebs and Schmidly want him here” Take football out of the equation and every other sport is moving and progressing….Lobo fans griped when Rocky was hear and they will gripe when Locks replacement comes….Wanna build a winner in football? Shut up…put your butss in the seats…fill the stadium and chant fire Locksley every home game and watch it get done….you don’t show up…you got no business complaining about the kids on the field and the product they produce for only $76.00 a season ticket. My UT tickets cost that for a single game ticket to a non-Big12 game. Shut up and go to the game…make something happen by showing numbers and potential revenue…New Mexico fans are dumber than dirt when it comes to football…that is why the Lobos are having to claw their way up.

Dave,
You must’ve been living under a rock for the last year and a half. Nobody is slamming the players. But given the antics of the coaches and administration, I (and MANY like me)will NEVER waste another cent on this athletics program. And if you don’t like the way we do things in Albuquerque, why don’t YOU leave for the season, or better yet, for-everrrrrrrr.
Burn.
