Floridians should take action to stop Quran burning
Editor,
There are times that call for words and there are times that call for action. The Qur’an burning scheduled by Rev. Terry Jones on Saturday is a time that calls for action. If this event is permitted to occur, the effect will be catastrophic. There is only a minute minority of the citizens of this country who support this event. The vast majority of us must not remain passive as this minute minority of us commits an act that we do not sanction and that will have severe detrimental effects for us all, all over the world.
There is still time for enough people to occupy the small church in Gainesville, Florida and prevent this event from taking place, by seizing the copies of the Qur’an that Rev. Terry Jones is planning to burn and taking them to a safe place and ensuring that not one copy of the Quran is burned. It is imperative that this be done to demonstrate to the world that we, in the United States, are not religious bigots that commit acts in the name of a god we have created to placate our egos.
If I were in Florida, I would immediately begin organizing enough people to prevent any burning of Qur’ans. Since I am in New Mexico, not Florida, I implore critically thinking people in Florida, who desire what is best for this country, and the world, to do what is required to prevent the burning on a single copy of the Qur’an.

Pastor Jones isn’t the first performance artist to express himself through with an Inferno. A thought experiment: How long before Salvador Dali’s “blasphemous” caricature of Mohammed burning in hell is expunged from art history classes? How about Auguste Rodin? or Gustave Dore?
Each of these artists caricatured Mohammed’s roasting in Hell— as related in Dante’s trilogy “The Divine Comedy” [Inferno XXVIII, 19-42]. http://zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/dantes_inferno/

And if academia is unwilling to stand in solidarity with Terry Jones, what’s to stop the global Taliban from silencing any and every expression Muslims deem “offensive”? Archived depictions of Mohammed serve as a poignant reminder that such imagery has been part of Western AND ISLAMIC culture since the Middle Ages— and serve as a resource for those interested in defending free expression.

It is a sad state of affairs when the architects/cheerleaders/war profiteers of our fruitless, bloodly, unneccessary, unconstitutional mideast wars implore this pastor to stop burning the Qur’an because it will “endanger the troops”.
If Clinton, Gen “Betray Us”, and the Nobel Peace prize winning consititutional scholar were concerned about the troops, they would have brought them home a long time ago.

The Bible burning scheduled annually by Saudi religious police is a time that calls for action. If this event is permitted to occur AGAIN, Robert’s hypocrisy will be catastrophic to his ego. The vast minority of the citizens of Saudi Arabia support Bible burning. The small majority who don’t must not remain passive as the vast majority of Saudis commit an act that Robert does not sanction and that will have severe detrimental effects for Robert’s ego, all over the world.
There is still time for enough Saudis to occupy the city of Mecca and prevent this event from taking place, by seizing copies of the Bible that Saudi religious police are planning to burn and taking them to a safe place and ensuring that not one copy of the Bible is burned. It is imperative that this be done to demonstrate to the world that Robert is not a hypocrit that allows others to commit acts that offend Robert’s exquisitely sensitive ego.

Of course, if Robert were in Mecca, his efforts to immediately begin organizing enough people to prevent any burning of Bibles would result in his arrest and expulsion. Since Robert is not in Mecca, he should implore critically thinking people in Saudi Arabia, who desire what is best for the world, to do what is required to gratify Robert’s ego and prevent the burning on a single copy of the Bible.
Good plan!

@Steven: If the main objective is to avoid endangering the troops, Steven suggests unconditional surrender. On that theory, you know what would really stop the terrorists’ ability to endanger Americans? If Americans submitted to Islam and adopted Sharia law!

i don’t think anyone was suggesting trying to use judicial means to stop this. just suggesting that besides not serving the purpose it was purported to address, it could have negative consequences for our american troops, otherwise def. sec. Gates wouldn’t have called. it doesn’t even begin to do anything about the issue in NY(as the imam has said it won’t affect the mosque being built) which is why terry jones said he was going to burn the korans. thusly it can only be seen a christian attack on islam. as you said “muslims burning bibles” christ said to turn the other cheek. how is this turning the other cheek? i don’t remember a part at the end where he said, “unless they’re trying to build a mosque at ground zero.” also by your reasoning, ‘christians’ rape kids all the time. I haven’t heard anyone say jones doesn’t have the right to do this, only that he’s a jackass for doing so, like your mouthy friend at the bar that gets your group into an unnecessary fight when all you wanna do is have a good time.

Muslims absolutely burn the bible! I’ve not once heard an individual in a Muslim state, say, “we need action from the authorities to prevent the bible burning!” I’m sick and tired of this double standard! Here’s a plan instead of hiding on the DL, protest!

@dirge no said that some people that claim to be muslim don’t burn bibles. just like some people that claim to be christians(catholic priests and mormon wackos alike) RAPE CHILDREN!!! and no one said that its was wrong to burn a bible/koran, just that in this case its unnecessarily inflammatory. i only have one standard for all religions, and it goes like this:
The more people you put together, the more collectively stupid they become, and thus more easily mislead. Therefore the true path of religious adherence is travelled alone. I attend the non-denominational church for one.

At this point, one could argue that Jones should go through with the burning of some Qur’ans just to demonstrate that 1) an American has First Amendment rights independent of threats and rent-a-mobs in the Middle East and South Asia; and 2) a Christian does not have to abide by the politically correct shibboleth that the Qur’an is a holy book. Most media analysts do not give this second point the justice it deserves, bending over backwards as they do (almost as far as the Obama Administration) to present the Islamic perspective in a positive light.
As a Christian, I do not accept that Muhammad received revelation from God, for many reasons, most saliently that he and his “revelation” deny (in Sura 4:157) the key doctrine of my, and 2.3 billion other Christians’, faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to atone for the entire human race’s sins. That does not mean Christians should run out to buy a Qur’an and toss it into the fireplace—but neither does it mean that we have to pay Muslim-mandated obeisance to its alleged “holiness,” either.

Many times I have heard Catholic’s referred to as idolatry worshipers because of the statutes and pictures. If I understand the position of Islam correctly, they believe a book that has their religious words is sacred, as is the absence of a painting or drawing of Mohamed, meaning any depiction is a sacrilege. Does this sound like idolatry worship?
After all, a book that has cooking recipes is just a book, made from plants. Print the words of Judea Christian belief or drawings of Moses, Jesus and the followers and it is still just a book: a bible. But, print the words of Mohammad on those pages and it becomes something sacred, something to worship. Is this not idolatry?

Could we just start a ‘burn a holy book day’ this saturday? enough christian groups try to push bibles on everyone on campus that it would be easy to collect plenty for everyone to burn something. The Buddhist group that I have seen on campus gives out the little introduction book for free, it is not quite the holy book but we can pretend. Also the Principia Discordia is available for free online, but would have to be printed, maybe we could get some donations to help with the printing costs. I think that everyone is going about this all wrong, they are making a huge deal out of burning a few Qur’ans and then saying it is no big deal by comparing the actions of a few crazy Americans to the actions of a few crazy people scattered around the rest of the world. Why not compare the actions of a few crazy Americans to the actions of the rest of the people in the US? Holy books are generally printed on paper that works wonderfully for rolling your own cigarettes and with how many groups will just hand you a bible for free many poor college students just get a bible from the local jesus pushers and buy some lose rolling tobacco. Plenty of holy books get burned like this, so why not just publicize that? The danger is making the crazies (both in Florida and the rest of the world) think that they are something special and have influence. So burn all the Qur’ans you want, it is not special treatment of Islam anymore than using a bible as rolling paper is special treatment of Christianity. Does anyone want to celebrate ‘burn a holy book day’ with me tomorrow?

And Tom Hanks was the actor* in a movie about Christ and Mary Magdalene, it was not his “theory.” The movie was based on something called a “book” – and it’s a work of fiction.

How is any of what I said in anyway advocating ‘Islamo-supremacism’? I said that do not give any of the religions a special place and some how I am advocating Islam? How is calling all of them (and by ‘them’ I mean religious groups) crazies advocating a specific one? I am actually very interested in how you decided that I was advocating any religion.
