For president, a UNM class ring trumps experience

Last updated: 01/09/12 6:27am

Editor,

Congratulations to Bob Frank, the Provost at Kent State University, on being selected as the next UNM president. It’s no surprise to me that he was selected; after all, he’s a UNM alumnus.

As qualified as he may be, his selection was not ensured by those qualifications, but by his alumnus status. I take nothing away from those qualifications and hope he has a long and successful presidency.

It just seems that this community places more value on being connected to the community, rather than being the best candidate.

Anyone remember UNM basketball coach, McKay? His dad just happened to be an ex-Lobo player and the coach failed miserably.

Rocky Long is another selection based on his being an ex-Lobo quarterback. If you take a reality check, you Lobo fans will see he also failed. He had a losing record at UNM.

The Journal’s front page on Jan. 4 shows Frank showing off his UNM class ring. That ring is so much more valuable than his résumé.

It isn’t just about Dr. Frank being connected to the community. He has all the qualifications, and then some. He has experience represented by the HSC and main campus, plus he has an understanding of the value of athletics. Give the guy a chance, please. Don’t create a toxic environment for him before he even takes the job.

So, in addition to Long and McKay, provide some insight or info on all the other former Lobos put into positions that they then disgraced? Can you come up with more than 2? I can come up with more than two failures that were not Lobo connected at all, and both of them got dumped this year;Locksley and Barlow.

It’s nice to have an opinion, Jeffrey…we all do. But it isn’t just the pedigree his ring provides, it is also the resume and success. And being the only one of the five that wouldn’t have come with some baggage. A perfunctory google check showed the other four had issues.

And this goes farther back than his UNM status. He’s a NM high school grade and grew up here. Some flunky sports coach who had a dad who knew a guy that played football but grew up somewhere else is not the same as a guy who grew up in NM, went to UNM and now wants to return to NM.

Give him a chance Jeffrey. Don’t count him out before he even has a chance to give it a go. He was willing to take the job for less than a football coach, or even that abortion of a president Schmidley. That has to say something.

I believe you misinterpreted my remarks. I believe the new UNM President is highly qualified and should lead UNM to great things. My frustration is with this community who often place a higher value on names, connections and birth place than on education and experience. Yes, many other coaches who were not from here have also failed. That was not the point. I mentioned McKay and Long because they were from here and that was a major factor in the hiring. The Journal highlited his UNM ring in a large front page photo and seemed to “mention” his education and experience as an after thought. Give me a break and try to see my intent in my letter.

Its a well used verse that in NM it’s not what you know but who you know. I like the fact that Frank has a degree in clinical psychology- he’ll need it to perceive and deal efectively with the disfunctional personalities at UNM, i.e. Regents and all the old “patron” syle power in the state.

Couldn’t agree more. Since UNM was left with the leftovers that the other universities won’t touch with a 10 foot pole for their presidential candidate pool, they might as well have gone with the alum. And as for the ‘give him a chance’ rhetoric, there’s nothing ‘toxic’ about considering the qualifications of a potential hire.
