APD: drunk driver hit student

Last updated: 02/13/12 12:42am

UNM student Wolfgang Scott-Cohen was struck while riding his scooter by a drunk driver in a pickup truck in the UNM area Friday afternoon.

Scott-Cohen was taken to the UNMH intensive care unit, where he is undergoing treatment for brain injuries. Scott-Cohen’s mother, Rikki Scott, said he is unconscious at this time.

“He is making progress and we hope it continues,” she said. “We appreciate everyone’s support.”

The family said an arrest has been made in the case, but no names have been released. Albuquerque Police Department confirmed the incident, but was unable to give any other information as of Sunday afternoon.

Riki Scott said her son is not currently receiving visitors other than close family, but will notify friends and family via Facebook when he is able to see them.

Scott-Cohen is a senior pre-med student majoring in psychology.

So, so sad and completely avoidable. I hope that he recovers fully and is able to fulfill his aspirations. Also, I hope the idiotic piece of s**t that did this to him actually gets convicted and goes to jail, unlike so many of the scumbags who seem to slither their way out of the charges.

Apparently the student ran a stop sign and was not wearing a helmet. The other driver was not drunk. This is such a waste and is deeply sad, but the Lobo lacks accuracy and should print a retraction based on accurate current information.

Lobo: check the Albuquerque journal article about the accident. It doesnt say that the other driver wasnt drinking or was later arrested so its possible that he was. It does mention the running of the stoplight and lack of helmet however….
