Aztecs’ pitchers shut out batters for 3 games

In a battle of pitching versus offense, pitching won out.

‘Underdogs’ prepare for MWC

The softball team has a serious chip on its shoulder heading into MWC action.

Offense shines despite losses

With four road losses in Austin, Texas during the weekend, the softball team dropped out of the top 25 for the second time this season, according to national polls released Tuesday.

Alumni fall to current crew

The volleyball team’s off-season seems more on than off.
The Lobos kicked off their spring schedule last Thursday with a 3-1 win in the annual alumni game.

The best defense is a good offense

The UNM softball team didn’t have an affinity for defense, nor did Colorado State. The Lobos smashed 17 hits — four long balls — en route to Saturday’s 13-7 win against CSU at Lobo Field. Head coach Erica Beach said she expected an offensive battle against the Rams. “That’s how they play the game,” she said.

Small-statured batter close to colossal feat

At 5-feet-4-inches tall, UNM utility player Jessica Garcia isn’t the most daunting player on the softball diamond. But when she steps into the batter’s box, pitchers shake in their cleats.

Grand showdown by the Rio

The New Mexico State softball team won the battle, but UNM won the war.
In the series finale of the Rio Grande Rivalry, the Aggies took a 6-0 decision from the Lobos on Tuesday at Lobo Field. But it was UNM who came out victorious.

Who will sit in Flanagan’s seat?

Athletics Director Paul Krebs called it one of the “most desirable jobs in the country.” So it’s easy to understand why interim head coach Yvonne Sanchez is so attracted to the opening.

Hurler nearly pitcher perfect

Can you smell what DeBroeck is cooking? Sophomore right-hand hurler Kaela DeBroeck was virtually unstoppable on the mound Sunday, allowing two hits and one run in seven innings of work.

Remembering Flanagan

To his former players, Don Flanagan was stoic, detail-oriented, stubbornly obsessed with fundamentals and occasionally humorous — but he was unquestionably a great coach. Former UNM point guard Amy Beggin said Flanagan was like “a little kid on the basketball court,” always smiling and enjoying every second.

Flanagan leaves after almost two decades

Don Flanagan, after 16 seasons as UNM women’s basketball head coach, resigned Monday after initially deciding to return to the sidelines next season. The reason for Flanagan’s sudden change of heart: Five freshmen players (Tina Doughty, Erin Boettcher, Morgan Toben, Brianna Taylor and Jasmine Patterson) intended to quit the program, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

Team must rally to win down the line

The UNM men’s tennis team made it look effortless — but in the wrong way.
The Lobos dropped a 6-1 decision to Nebraska on Friday, before falling 5-2 to Fresno State on Sunday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

Swept, but not left in the dust

The Washington softball team showed exactly why it’s a national powerhouse. The undefeated, fifth-ranked Huskies swept the UNM softball team in a three-game series over the weekend at Lobo Field.

BYU shoots to kill in last game at The Pit

The UNM women’s basketball team said goodbye to its two seniors — Amanda Best and Jessica Kielpinski — who played in their final home game Tuesday.
Best scored 10 points and Kielpinski chipped in seven, but it wasn’t enough to beat league-leading Brigham Young.

TCU duo goes unanswered

For the first 36 minutes of Saturday’s contest, the UNM women’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with league-leading TCU. But the Lobos were outscored 13-3 down the final 7:13 of the game to lose 84-71 at The Pit. “We played a good offensive game,” freshman forward Morgan Toben said.

‘Just not enough’ against SDSU

From one of its best performances of the season to its worst.
After posting a season-high 53 percent shooting Saturday against Colorado State, the UNM women’s basketball team went ice-cold Tuesday, notching a dismal 22 percent from the field en route to a 50-44 home loss to San Diego State. With the loss, the Lobos fall to 9-14 on the season and 3-8 in Mountain West Conference action.

Coach leads sweep of Utah, has fun doing it

Don’t remind the UNM softball team how it fared last year; it has already forgotten. Under former head coach Ty Singleton, the Lobos went 11-37 overall and 1-14 in Mountain West Conference action in 2010.

Bouncing from loss to win

The UNM women’s tennis team earned a split this weekend.
The Lobos fell 4-3 in a heartbreaker to NMSU on Friday before rebounding for a 6-1 win against Montana State on Saturday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex. “Our purpose statement as a team is to improve,” head coach Roy Cañada said.

Freshmen ‘eager’ for NMSU

The UNM women’s tennis team doesn’t want to relive its last trip to New Mexico State. For the third time in school history, the Lobos dropped a 6-1 decision to the Aggies last year in Las Cruces. “To say that we are eager for this matchup is an understatement,” head coach Roy Cañada said.

Wins all around in 13-hour rout

Thirteen was the number for the UNM men’s and women’s tennis teams. It’s the number of hours the Lobos spent on court in four matches Saturday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
