UNM Vice President for Advancement Judy K. Jones announced earlier this month that Leslie Elgood was selected to be the UNM Director of Development and President of the UNM Foundation, Inc., effective immediately.

The UNM Foundation, Inc. is an incorporated non-profit organization that receives, invests and distributes gifts of private support to UNM. The UNM Development Office helps direct the foundation in conjunction with Jones and the Foundation Board of Directors.

Jones said Elgood’s selection was the result of a lengthy and rigorous search process.

“Leslie is an experienced professional fund-raiser,” Jones said in a news release. “She has management experience both here and in her previous positions and she is familiar with UNM and the broader community. Under her leadership, our development program will continue to move forward.”

Elgood, who has held the position on an interim basis since January, has 20 years of experience in fund-raising and management. From 1998 to 2001, she served as director of Major Gifts for the UNM Foundation, Inc.

From 1992-98, she was general manager and director of development for Catholic Charities, Inc./Sacramento Food Bank Services. From 1986-91, Elgood was with the Sutter Hospitals Foundation, Sutter Health, first as assistant director of fund development and then as director.

The American Solar Challenge, a 2,300-mile solar-powered race featuring up to 40 cars on a 10-day journey along historic Route 66, and the UNM, are looking for volunteers to assist at a local checkpoint at UNM July 19-21. Volunteers of all ages are being sought to participate in the world’s longest solar car race.

The race, which begins in Chicago, Ill., on July 15, is one of the events planned along the famous American highway during its Diamond Jubilee. Several opportunities to volunteer, either individually or as a group, are available to interested parties. The American Solar Challenge Solar Scout volunteer program enables youth of all ages to support the solar car race by learning about solar power, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Children can earn a Solar Scout badge, which is a bright and colorful tribute to solar car racing and historic Route 66. The American Solar Challenge Solar Scout program enables youth groups, scouts, teen groups or schools to learn about solar power and the applications of science while participating with the American Solar Challenge program. While youth groups are encouraged to participate, youth who are not part of a group and senior citizens are also welcome.

There are two methods of registration for solar scout program. Individuals, youth groups and or school groups can register by completing the on-line form at http://www.formulasun.org, or by calling Laura Caron at (303) 275-4090. Interested participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Registration forms must be received by July 10.
