LETTER: Freedom of speech more valuable following attacks

Editor,

Freedom of speech in the United States is awesome and needs to be protected, even in Richard Berthold's classroom.

Hate speech, such as applauding evil acts as Berthold has done, is only magnified during this time of grief, therefore causeing such an outrage in people. By looking beyond the words of this one person, we are able to clearly see the need to protect our liberties and freedom of speech.

Caring friends and hurt citizens, don't worry.

Tears on the faces of the spouses, children, friends and loved-ones of those murdered during the attacks are wiped away by the massive outpouring of love, compassion and humanity shown by the vast majority of human beings in the world.

As shattered lives try to move forward from this tragedy, we value our freedoms even that much more.

Instead of being remembered as someone who exercised his freedom of speech to console and show love to those in crisis, Richard Berthold will only be remembered as using his freedom of speech to bring more pain and hate into the world.

A lesson for all of us.
