Tim Canova, associate professor at the UNM School of Law, will present "Globalization at the Cross-Roads or at the Brink?" today at noon at the UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute, 801 Yale Blvd.
The UNM Student Organization for Latin American Studies is sponsoring the event.
Canova will discuss the policies and programs underlying today's model of corporate globalization.
He will analyze the impact of the International Monetary Fund and other free trade institutions on Latin American population, The discussion will have an emphasis on Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
He also will discuss whether the International Monetary Fund model is the only path to development available for the countries and a possible relationship between it and growing levels of inequality, poverty and political instability throughout the world.
The topics will be addressed in the context of the war against terrorism, the global economic crisis and the anti-globalization movement.

The movement was jumpstarted by the 1999 protests in Seattle against the World Trade Organization.
The lecture is open to the public, and the audience will be allowed to ask questions and discuss the topics.
