Editor,
ASUNM Finance Committee members Sarah Bullard and Evan Kist exercise both poor judgment and lack of intelligent insight in their ignorant comments regarding funding the M.E.Ch.A. High School Conference. They propose that the conference is not worthy of ASUNM funding because they do not believe the conference will directly impact UNM students.
The conference allows UNM students the opportunity to learn valuable organizational and outreach skills. Developing a conference is hard work. It involves a number of skills such as advertising, community outreach, communication, teamwork, facilitation skills and public speaking. The experience, regardless of the theme of the conference, is invaluable.
Finally, UNM is a state institution and we have a responsibility to provide the community with opportunities for education. One possible benefit is that conference attendees will someday enroll in UNM. The M.E.Ch.A. group should be commended for their efforts, and Ms. Bullard and Mr. Kist should realize that the world is not bordered by University, Girard, Lomas and Central.
