LETTER: Davalos' focus on basketball is another leadership mistake

Editor,

UNM is not doing the right thing by trying to shove a ton of money together for a new men's basketball coach. Already, three top coaches have taken their names off the list of candidates for head coach.

Presumably this was because the money just was not there for them. In order for us to have a good athletic program, we need to focus not on just the revenue sports. The money needs to be spread around more. Teams like men's swimming, gymnastics and wrestling existed on fractional amounts of what a basketball coach makes and severance pay he gets after his tenure as coach.

The basketball or football team is not going to get better just by the coach we hire. Remember that the students are the ones that actually train and compete, not the coaches. Rudy Davalos needs to not just think about how much money the teams are taking in. He needs to focus on students that train their whole lives for an opportunity to compete at the college level and get let down because all an athletic director thinks about is how he can put one more advertisement in The Pit.

Unfortunately, Davalos just thinks about why the football team doesn't sell out more games in his newly re-modeled stadium.
