LETTER: Pledge not in need of revision since it does not violate laws

Editor,

I am writing in response to the letter I just finished reading sent to you by one Seth Warren Heath. His letter remarked that the pledge defied the Constitution. I would like to point out that in his letter he commented that the government required people to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I, personally, have never heard of a law requiring all American citizens to say the Pledge of Allegiance. In all the schools I have ever attended in the states of Florida, Texas and here in New Mexico, I have never been forced to say the pledge.

Those who decide to say it do so on their own. There is no one there to twist their arm or point a gun to their head threatening to pull the trigger unless they participate in the recital of the pledge. I have also never seen or heard of anyone being taunted or beaten because they felt the need to forgo the phrase "under God." I believe the pledge should stay the way it is, because even if the government were to change it there would still be controversy because of it.
