Editor,
All too seldom does one hear instructors "bragging on" their students.
As a postscript to Angela Heisel's article, "UNM displays holiday generosity," in Monday's Daily Lobo, I would like to air how my English 101 students are finding "the satisfaction of knowing several readings and some class discussion of the "homelessness problem," one of my students declared her case of writer's block when the time came for drafting the semester's third essay. Just an essay about the problem and theme are not enough. "We should do something," the class all agreed.
Hence, the semester final project was born - collecting money, non-perishable staple food items, and warm apparel to donate to a local outreach for poor and homeless people prior to Thanksgiving break. My students had participated with me all semester in writing projects, and they have now offered me an opportunity to participate with them in their project.
This is not a mere academic exercise about a problem; this is an activity about helping people. I am really proud of these students, who, by the way, also wrote effective pieces on our topic.
