by Jennifer Onuska

Fortunately for some, and unfortunately for others, the fall semester is just around the corner. For those of us who have been working hard at UNM all summer, we are excited to see more students back on campus occupying the new leather chairs at the SUB. That's right, the SUB is open! What a concept. The heart of campus has once again opened its doors. We encourage you to stop by and see what the building has to offer.

For those of you who had the summer off, coming back to school may not sound like the most exciting way to spend your time. To ease the pain, there are several exciting things happening this semester. For example, we will have two weeks of celebration upon returning to campus. With Welcome Back Days and the SUB Grand Opening festivities, there are plenty of events to satisfy everyone. There will be free food, concerts by Vertical Horizon on Aug. 26 and Something Corporate on Aug. 28, a hypnotist, great movies in the SUB theatre and plenty of student organizations providing information on how to get involved.

However, the fun does not stop there. Homecoming week is Monday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 4. The ASUNM Homecoming Executive Agency is hard at work planning a week full of events for any student on campus to enjoy. Opportunities to get involved with the ASUNM Homecoming Committee will be provided during Welcome Back Days. Get ready to show your school spirit and intimidate our competition. The theme is "Carnival on the Rio" so save your Mardi Gras beads and paint your masks now.

The Associated Students of UNM, your undergraduate student government, continues to work hard for you this summer. Each branch is preparing for the upcoming school year.

Besides Homecoming, other Executive Agencies are busy planning programming events to satisfy our diverse population.

One new event that will occur on Sept. 26 is the Fall Frenzy. The ASUNM Community Experience is coordinating with the Homecoming Committee to provide a campus beautification project for our students and alumni to enjoy during Homecoming Week. The Legislative branch is also busy, researching student issues, preparing for the fall budget process and training newly elected senators. The Judicial branch is currently in the process of training its new Associate Justices.

We hope our enthusiasm is contagious and you are excited for the fall. ASUNM hopes you will take part in the exciting events we have planned this semester whether volunteering or being a part of the audience. In addition, we hope you will express your concerns and opinions to the president, vice president and Senate so we can make sure the voices of students are heard throughout our campus.
