Staff Report
Lobo men's golf team member Spencer Levin left quite a mark at the 104th U.S. Open last weekend, finishing tied for 13th place overall.
Levin finished the tournament ahead of the likes of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Vijay Singh. The UNM sophomore shot 5-over par in the final round Sunday on brutal, unfriendly course conditions and was 8-over par for the tournament. Only 11 players shot better than Levin's 75 on the final day of the Open.
He also holds the distinction of shooting the lowest score of any amateur. His finish was the best by any amateur in the U.S. Open since 1971.
The top-15 finish also qualifies Levine for next year's U.S. Open.
Levin made it to the Open at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York by qualifying through local and sectional qualifying rounds. The local round was held at Twin Warriors Golf Course in Santa Ana Pueblo, where Levin shot a round of 69 to advance to the sectionals at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. The top four finishers at Lake Merced advanced to the U.S. Open, and Levin finished tied for second out of 72 other golfers.

Levin shot 1-under on the first day of the Open and was tied for 12th place heading into the tournament's second day. His hole-in-one on the 179-yard 17th hole was perhaps the highlight of the entire first day.
On the second day, Levin shot 3-over and easily made the cut for the final two rounds of the weekend. At that point, he was tied with Casey Wittenberg as the top amateur. Only four other amateurs advanced to weekend play.
