Staff Report
UNM's Kailin Downs won two out of three matches in Ichihara, Japan this week to help Team USA defeat Japan in the 2004 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship.
Playing on the other side of the world did not make a difference to Downs in the three-day tournament, as she took the first match from Japan's Chika Yamamoto 74-77. She went on to win the second round with the help of UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, beating the team of Yamamota and Miki Saiki, 146-148.
Downs wasn't able to pull off a sweep and lost in the final round to Mao Kohyama, 73-75.
Last season, Downs earned honorable mention All-America honors for the second-straight season and was named an Academic All American. Downs will be a senior at UNM this fall and will look to break the senior scoring record. She owns the sophomore and junior scoring-average records at UNM, and was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for the second-straight year this season.
