Former Lobo continues basketball career as coach

Staff Report

Former UNM point guard Senque Carey took a job with the coaching staff at Portland State University for the 2004-05 season. Carey worked last year as an undergraduate assistant coach with the UNM men's basketball team.

Affectionately referred to as "Q" by Lobo fans, Carey came to UNM after transferring from the University of Washington. He was a starter for most of the 2001-02 season and averaged 6.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Tragedy struck the next year when just two games into the season Carey suffered a spinal cord injury when he fell awkwardly while trying to take a charge against Northwestern State University. The injury left him paralyzed for several days and ultimately ended his playing career.

Carey, now fully recovered, begins a coaching career at PSU. These last two years have helped him better understand the game of basketball, and he has learned the nuances of coaching despite his inability to play, he told GoLobos.com.

Portland State is a member of the Big Sky Conference. The team was 11-16 last year, a five-game improvement from the 2002-03 season. PSU is also the school where Lobo head coach Ritchie McKay began his head-coaching career.
