Men's tennis team out of tournament

UNM came up short in the HEB Baylor Intercollegiates, suffering two losses in the singles quarterfinals and two more losses in the doubles round of 16.

Senior Ryan Stotland was taken down by Alabama's Joseph Jung, 6-2, 6-3 in the Gold Flight quarterfinals.

Senior David Kowalski and freshman Max Jones both fell in the consolation bracket.

Junior Eric Conklin almost staved off defeat in the quarterfinals of the Green Flight losing in three sets (6-1, 0-6, 7-6) to University of Texas-Arlington's Ian Vazquez-Rowe.

The doubles' teams of Stotland/Kowalski and Jones/Kamil Pajkowski were taken down in the round of 16 of the Gold Flight. Jones and Pajkowski lost to Texas Christian's Jacob Martin and Andrew Ulrich, 8-6. Stotland and Kowalski, the tournament's No. 2 seed, fell to UT-Arlington's Niels Buksik and Sandy Farquharson, 8-5.

Women's tennis posts strong showing

UNM finished strong on the final day of the Brigham Young invitational Saturday coming in first place in flights one, two and six of singles competition.

UNM's top players Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic each won their flights while freshman Jennifer Ryba's performance won her first place in the sixth singles flight.

Gersic joined the team in Provo, Utah, the same day she lost her match to the No. 357 player in the world, Stephanie Dubois, in the Coleman Vision Tennis Championships here in Albuquerque.
