Lobos get first conference win

Staff Report

Big games from DonTrell Moore and cornerback Gabriel Fulbright helped spur the Lobos to their first Mountain West Conference win, 24-20 over UNLV.

Moore looked completely recovered from a three-week-old knee injury, running for 141 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown came on an 8-yard run in the first quarter to put UNM up, 7-0.

Also contributing on the ground was Marcus Smith. Smith, a receiver out of San Diego, rushed for 83 yards, including a 65-yard run in the third quarter that tied the game at 17. UNM almost doubled the Rebels' rushing yardage, out-gaining them 284 to 156.

Quarterback Kole McKamey, back after missing a game last week with concussion symptoms, completed 14-of-26 passes for 92 yards, including a third-quarter touchdown toss of 34 yards to Anthony Carter.

On defense, the Lobos allowed 17 first-half points but managed to force six turnovers and limited the Rebels to a field goal in the second half.

The Rebels went to two different quarterbacks during the game, and each was picked off by Fulbright.

Kurt Nantkes finished 8-for-18 for 82 yards and an interception, while Shane Steichen went 14-for-19 for 124 yards and the other pick.

Linebacker Mike Mohoric also had a huge game for the Lobos defensively, forcing two fumbles. The last fumble came on a sack and squashed a late UNLV drive.

Steichen threw two touchdown passes in the first half, one for 47 yards, as UNLV built a 17-10 lead.

UNM scored the first two touchdowns of the second half, and all UNLV could add was a field goal late in the third quarter.
