Staff Report
Rain stopped the match, but it didn't stop the Air Force Falcons from dismantling the UNM men's tennis team 5-2 in the Mountain West Conference Tournament in San Diego, Calif.
However, the No. 2-seeded women's tennis team defeated Wyoming. The women will face UNLV in the semifinals today.
The women's team won all three of its doubles matches and walked away with victories in three singles matches.
A rain delay kept the men's duo of Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski from finishing a match against Trevor Johnson and Chris Dong, but the Lobos won the doubles point anyway.
The Lobos were seeded No. 3 in the tournament, while Air Force was No. 6. The Falcons move on to face the No. 2 seed Brigham Young Cougars today.
At the No. 1 doubles seed, David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland defeated the Falcons' tandem of Shannon Buck and Tyler McClung, 8-3.
Eric Conklin and Derek Boland secured the doubles point for UNM with an 8-5 win against Justin Lau and Robby Alexander at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Singles play didn't fare as well for the Lobos, however. UNM lost five of the six matches, with Stotland winning the lone singles match at the No. 2 spot. He beat McClung 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
UNM placed several players on the all-conference team, with the awards given out before the tournament at the MWC banquet. Max Jones received Freshman of the Year honors, becoming the first player in Lobo history to snag the award. Jones also made the All-MWC singles first team, along with Stotland and Kowalski.
Kowalski and Stotland also made the All-MWC doubles first team.
