Staff Report
Aaron Johnson was dismissed from the UNM men's basketball team Sunday by head coach Ritchie McKay.
"I am disappointed to announce the dismissal of Aaron Johnson from our men's basketball program due to a violation of team policy," McKay said in a news release. "My desire is to attract young men with character who are prepared and invested in UNM, our basketball program and our community. Unfortunately, all we can do as coaches is to provide an opportunity for young men to achieve their goals. However, when you are working with this age group, sometimes decisions are made that warrant the removal of that opportunity, at least as it exists in our program."
Neither McKay nor Johnson could be reached for comment Sunday.
Johnson transferred to UNM from Penn State in June and was going to sit out the 2006-2007 season because of NCAA transfer rules.

The senior would have had one year of eligibility remaining for the 2006-2007 season.
"I was looking forward to having Aaron as a part of our team for the next two years, but there is a standard of expectation that we have set for our student athletes, and at this time he is unable to meet that standard," McKay said in the release.
