Sports in brief

Women's Tennis

The team's run for a title at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships came to an end on Sunday when junior Nora Quintal was knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals.

She was defeated by Jessica Samosa 6-2, 6-0. Samosa was the tournament's No. 6 seed.

Quintal advanced to the semifinals by defeating Dolly Chang of Brigham Young University in a back-and-forth match that ended 0-6, 7-6, 11-9.

Quintal got off to a fast start in the championships and had perhaps her biggest career victory in the round of 16. In that round, she defeated nationally-ranked Emily Kirchem of Colorado State, 3-6, 6-2, 13-11. Kirchem was ranked 120th in the nation by the ITA, and was the first nationally-ranked competitor Quintal has ever recorded a victory against.

Lobo Lucy Scott fell in the round of 32 to Suzanna Maksovic 6-1, 6-3, after having a deep run into the tournament. Maksovic, from Denver University, was the tournament's No. 9 seed.

In the round of 64, Scott defeated Lauren Franziska Jendrian 6-4, 6-2.

The Lobos were without standout duo Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek. The pair sat out in preparation for the ITA National Individual Indoor Championships that runs Nov. 3-6.

Men's Tennis

Max Jones was the last Lobo remaining in the singles bracket on the final day of competition at the Wilson/ITA Region VII Championships.

Jones defeated New Mexico State's Brice Magnanou 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Jones then went on to play in another long three-set match against Nima Roshan of BYU. Roshan was the No. 9 seed in the tournament, but Jones knocked him out 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

Freshman Johnny Parkes was taken out early, falling to Colorado's Mark Bundalo, who was seeded 10th. Parkes was defeated in the consolation quarterfinal qualifier in two sets, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles action, Jones and Kamil Pajkowski, seeded seventh in the tournament, were upset 9-8 in the quarterfinals by 16th-seeded Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez of BYU.

The team of senior Eric Conklin and freshman Graeme Kassautzki were defeated 8-5 in the consolation round.
