Letter: Free speech censored by left-biased media

Editor,

The column in Monday's Daily Lobo by Colin Donoghue, "Mass media fails public," places accusations of censorship on the right which are not entirely accurate. Anyone who believes the left has no voice need only look at this very paper to realize that this is false.

And if one is to consider neo-cons to be leftists, as I do, then it becomes apparent that a left-biased media is indeed overwhelming. It should also be understood that the extreme right has little to no voice in mainstream media, much like that of the extreme left. But really, isn't such journalism meant to be empirical and without bias from either side?

However, the left is by no means supportive of free speech.

If Donoghue wishes to talk about true censorship, he need only look at the recent arrests of historians David Irving and Germar Rudolf, both within the past month. And what was their crime? Showing scientifically and through historic documents that the Holocaust had been grossly exaggerated.

And it is none other than hate laws pushed by the left which has silenced these men. They were thrown in jail for simply writing about an event that happened more than 50 years ago. That is true censorship, far more than the mere loss of a job that a leftist journalist may face.
