7 Lobos win football accolades

Staff Report

The UNM football season has come to an end, and this time there will be no bowl game.

The Lobos (6-5) received a conditional invite to the Fort Worth Bowl in Texas, but were not selected in the end. The Big 12 will send Kansas (6-5) to play against Houston (6-5) from Conference USA in that one.

UNM went to an unprecedented three straight bowl games from 2002-2004, but will not go to its fourth in 2005.

Despite not being selected to a playoff game, the individual awards are pouring in.

Seven Lobo football players were named first-team All-Mountain West Conference on Monday - the most of any team in the conference. The seven first-team selections matches a program high, as the 2003 squad also accomplished that feat.

Senior tailback DonTrell Moore led the team with his fourth first-team All-MWC honor. Moore became the first player in MWC and UNM history to get that honor four years in a row. Moore also became the first UNM player to be named MWC Offensive Player of the Year.

Moore had company from his teammates on offense. Senior wide receiver Hank Baskett, senior center Ryan Cook and junior guard Robert Turner were selected as well.

Head coach Rocky Long's defense had three seniors named first-team All-Conference. Cornerback Gabriel Fulbright, linebacker Mike Mohoric and defensive end Evroy Thompson earned those honors.

Sophomore linebacker Cody Kase was an honorable mention selection.
