Lobos lose 73-61 to ASU

After jumping into the top 20 in the polls, the University of New Mexico women's basketball team was unable to pull off another victory against a ranked team.

No. 18 UNM (6-2) went on the road to play No. 12 Arizona State University and fell 73-61 on Tuesday night. It was the Lobos' second loss of the season; the first came at home against No. 17 Oklahoma.

With the victory, the Sun Devils (7-1) remain undefeated at home this season, with a perfect 5-0 mark in Tempe, Ariz.

UNM suffered from poor first-half shooting while the Sun Devils hit a high percentage of their shots. Most of the damage was done in the first half as the Sun Devils shot 65 percent, compared to the Lobos, who only converted 35 percent of their shots in the opening half.

The game went into intermission with the Sun Devils leading 46-30. The Lobos were never able to make a big enough run to get back in the game.

ASU's Kristen Kovedsy led all scorers with 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Dionne Marsh led UNM with 16 points and Jana Francis scored 10. Abbie Letz returned from an eye injury to play 37 minutes. She scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Lobos return home to play the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Dec. 9. Tip-off is set for 8:15 p.m.
