The infamous remarks of Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry are obviously stereotypical and not based on fact. However, in her delayed reaction to his comments, Michelle Touson revealed some personal stereotypes that are equally unacceptable. In the quoted text of coach DeBerry, he at no point limits the abilities of African Americans to athletics alone. He makes no reference to blacks as entertainment, their feelings, nor does he comment on their intellectual capabilities. He only addresses athletic prowess. Let me reiterate that Fisher DeBerry is a football coach. The comments were made in reference to a football game. It is only natural that they pertain to football, and nothing else. Many may take offense at his actual remarks, and rightly so- but it is unfair to put words and thoughts into his mouth. Take offense with the ideas that he actually expressed. I also find it incredible that in a letter denouncing racism Ms. Touson refers to sports fans as "White America". Are only white people sports fans? That is identical in sentiment to DeBerry's remark that blacks are better runners. Ms. Touson concludes with the statement that DeBerry's remarks were a slap in the face to every African American who has participated in an organized sport. How about the white and Hispanic athletes, or athletes of any other race? DeBerry is literally and directly denigrating their ability. His remarks demean anyone who works hard and trains in the spirit of competition. I do not support DeBerry's remarks, but I do support our fine student athletes and all that they have and will accomplish, both on and off the field. I would rather not make our seniors' last home game about Fisher DeBerry's ill-advised remarks. I will wear cherry and silver on Saturday. Go Lobos!
