Lobos pull wool over Ram's eyes

The UNM women's basketball team improved its record to 12-3 Saturday night after defeating Colorado State University 73-57 on the road.

Senior guard Abbie Letz led the Lobos with a double-double as she scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added six assists. The win is the third in a row for the 20th-ranked Lobos. UNM also improved to 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

Dionne Marsh got off to a slow start, scoring only one point in the first half. She was one of the main contributors for UNM in the second half however, and finished with 16 points.

Jana Francis also had a double-double and finished the contest with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Montgomery added 15 points.

The Lobos fell behind early, trailing 13-3 at one point. Behind hot shooting, UNM was able to go on a 12-0 run to take a 15-3 lead and never look back. Colorado State dropped its overall record to 7-6 and 1-1 in the MWC.

It was the second game in a row that UNM had a double-digit victory against a conference foe. On Thursday night, the Lobos handled the University of Utah 59-42 at The Pit.

The victory was the Lobos' sixth straight over No. 22 Utah, and UNM extended a 28-game home winning streak against MWC teams. UNM now has three victories over ranked opponents this season.

Brandi Kimble scored 16 points against Utah and Marsh added 15. Montgomery scored 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Letz led the team with nine rebounds and chipped in five points.

Utah scored a season low 42 points and fell to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the MWC with the loss.
