Road win just out of reach

Staff Report

The UNM men's basketball team took a late lead but fell short in the end, and its season-long road drought continued against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

The Lobos stumbled down the stretch and eventually lost 67-56 to UNLV in Las Vegas. UNM is now 12-8 on the season, 3-4 in the Mountain West Conference. All eight of the Lobos' losses have come away from The Pit.

The Runnin' Rebels improved to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Wendell White led UNLV in scoring, putting up 16 points. Jo'Van Adams added 13 points and Louis Amundson scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

UNM held a 56-55 lead with 5:03 remaining in the game but failed to score a single point the rest of the way. White hit a basket with 4:23 left, and that was all the scoring UNLV needed.

Seniors Mark Walters and David Chiotti led the Lobos in scoring, each putting up double figures in points. Chiotti scored 13 points while Walters added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Although Chiotti and Walters contributed well, the Lobos struggled to find any depth as the Runnin' Rebels' bench outscored the UNM bench 24-10. UNLV also outplayed UNM in the post, holding a 34-25 rebounding advantage.

Walters had three steals for the Lobos and moved into 10th on the UNM all-time list with 133 career steals.
